MG TD TF 1500 - 1936 SA project on eBay

Not mine, but I have met the owner. Big project, but they are not offered very often. Thought it might be of interest to some of you here.

Very, very difficult restoration. But a glorious car to own and drive. I have a '37 and I love it.

Steve I’m wondering if I’d seen your car at a past GOF? I missed not seeing any saloons at Buellton this year. Seems like there has been o e or two show up. There were several at our clubs GOF in Rohnert Park and then at Lake Tahoe. Several years later. They are beautiful stately automobiles.

I don't recall any SVW cars at any recent GoF West events. A few of the smaller and newer Y-Types and of course Z, Farina, etc. My SA hasn't been to a GoF since the previous owner took it to '85. I considered taking it this year but we were already committed to the TC, and the tires on the SA need to be replaced. Maybe next year.

They are amazing cars. This one went to a new owner in the San Diego area a few years ago.

A stunning car.

The SWV cars are indeed amazing, stately and grand. I have a memory of seeing one in a 50's British B/W film about the tightly-knit crew of a WWII British fastboat (rather like a US PT boat), who cannot find a place in post-war Britain.

They turn to crime - they buy their gallant boat as redundant, and set her up for high-speed smuggling. They make their plans in the gloomy garage one of them runs, and argue the widsom of their illegality over the bonnet of an SWV saloon with the radiator emblem removed. (MG content...)

The proud boat, really the star of the movie, pluckily gets them out of jam after jam, but is eventually sunk in ignominity, as the men are caught smuggling.

Any help with the movie's name is appreciated.

In the index to movies, one "VA" is actually a TD with wire wheels...

If you're looking for MG elegance, have a look at this rare (1 known to exist) SA Touring Coupé, and a rare elegant SA Charlsworth Tourer ...

One of our club members has a SA saloon, but I have no photos of it.

I have seen this Black SA now owned by a Sydney MG enthusiast. He also has a YTourer, a TD and a VA. Garage under house is a bit full. TD is in another section of garage.

The film in question is "The Ship that Died of Shame", based on the short story by Nicholas Monsarrat.

Hope this helps.

Ooooh! Just today I put my SA on the market on "Carsales.com" and "prewarcars". Then I opened up this website to see comments about SAs! Spooky!

Yes, they are great cars. I have been told that they are good and reliable, with no real vices. I love mine but realise I have too many projects to complete before my time is up!

Cheers

Somehow, the images of the SA failed to attach ... trying again.

Gord, that coupe is drop-dead gorgeous, I wonder when the picture was taken. But tell me that isn't a kiddy seat in the back??
OT for a minute - our 3 boys are in their late 30s now, but they still talk about which side they preferred when they were jammed into the back of the YA.

Here's our SA. Yeah I know... whitewalls. They will be replaced soon.

Hi Steve,

That is a gorgeous SA. You are to be congratulated.

One of our club members has an SA drophead in equally nice condition.

The SA in the picture, is a one off conversion made by the owner, standing by the car. I met someone who has seen the car and apparently, it is a creation from an abandoned SA that he shortened by a foot and added a 6 cyl Healy engine and a T5 gearbox. But I'll bet the coachwork was a nightmare.

Must make a great tourer.

Gord,
If you are referring to the Black SA Coupe outside Kimber House as a "conversion", I can assure you are totally incorrect.

"The Airy Coupe" was built on a "chassis only" SA imported into Australia - new from the factory, and built by "Martin & King" coachbuilders in Melbourne Australia.

The car was shipped to the UK more than a decade ago, and toured the summer event season with it's owner, partner and young daughter before returning to Australia.

I believe there was an SA at GOF Central this year

"The Airy Cope" toured the UK & Europe in 2007. Some notes below from the owner.

"2007 - Leah was six. We did 7000 miles in two months around England first, then over to Europe from Hull to join the Beautiful Blue Danube 10 day trip organised by the Italian MG Car Club, back to Hull with a stretched timing chain via France, Belgium and Holland for repairs at Peter's, then up to Inverness in Scotland to visit the old family stamping grounds before heading back to Portsmouth to ship the car home. It rained the whole time!

The coupe is owned by Malcolm Robertson in Australia.
Steve Simmons

Tony,

Thanks so much, for setting the record straight. My information was very second-hand and obviously totally incorrect. It's nice to know the correct story.

Ever since photographs could be exchanged on the Internet, I have collected pictures of rare and unusual MGs and of course, this SA coupé is part of this collection.

I wonder how many people would like to have a replica of this outstanding MG?

A photo of the SA that my father sold a few years ago and also a couple of SA's on the Pre War rally at Yamba.
