MG TD TF 1500 - 1954 MGTF: Oil Pump priming with spin-on filter adaption?

I have in hand an adapter kit to convert our TF to use spin-on oil filters. My question is simply once installed do I still need to prime the oil pump after changing the filter?

Access is not an issue with our TF, but needing to turn the engine over is a bit of a push when doing changes without an extra hand nearby.

Background: Our 1954 TF is midway thru a creeping restoration….(in progress since 1982). The mechanicals have been done and the car is still drivable. All parts needed to complete a frame-off redo are on hand. All I need now is a bit of courage (and a few thousand dollars) to undertake the next step.

I have never had to prime it.

Nor me, but the filter is horizontal so can't be filled prior to installation. However a few turns of the pump will fill it very quickly, and a couple of seconds or so on the starter motor does the job, or turn it by hand on the starting handle.

Mike and Judy,

After owning two 1953 TDs I have never had to prime a late TD oil pump. As a kid, working in a gas station I changed my oil frequently and never thought of priming a pump. Of course no internet or access other owners or their experience,

Currently, at 77 years of age I again own a late 1953 TD. After reading of the care others take I now use the starter motor to raise pressure before turning on the ignition. I usually takes about 15 seconds to display 40 pounds of pressure.

I WOULD fill the filter with as much oil as you can to limit the spin time; it's awkward but you only spill a small amount by hoilding gthe filter at an angle until you are ready to spin it on. You will be surprised how much oil the filter element soaks up!

I'll second Tom's technique. A NAPA 1516 filter anti-drainback allows very little leakage before it's screwed on. Bud
