MG TD TF 1500 - 22952 TC/TD head

I know the above is correct casting # for the TC & early TD but what was the round hole TD/TF & TF 1500 casting #'s. Just filling in some blanks? Many thanks, Curt
TCs Curt

168422 is round hole TD and TF. 1500 had AEF117 or AEF118, one being a head ID other being block ID

168422 is the correct casting number for the round hole TD cylinder head. However, when the same cylinder head was used in the TF 1250, the valve chokes were bored out to allow the larger valves to be fitted; at this time the last 2 was ground off and a 5 stamped in it's place. The TF 1500 cylinder head was basically the same casting, but changes were made to the sand coring to move some water holes outwards, away from the larger bores in the block which had the same water holes moved out. Thus the cylinder head casting number was fully ground off and restamped AEF118.

Roger,

So good to see the correct designation of the TF 1250 and TF1500
Cylinder Head numbers/letters. As you have indicated, the TF 1250 is numbered 168425,with the number '5' stamped in.

The late TD Cylinder Head all cast number is 168422.

Very pleased you have passed on this correct information.

Cheers

Thought I'd mention that some 168422 heads can be found with large valves, and these were either fitted by a previous owner, or the head is or was fitted to a TD Mark II. My previous note relates to cylinder heads prepared by Morris Engines Division. However, all the work for the TD Mark II was undertaken at the MG Abingdon factory, and they didn't change the casting numbers. MG may have been supposed to change the TD2 engine plates to TD3 plates for the competition engines when the round water holes were introduced, but they were not very rigorous about this.

Another change to the TF head was the exhaust outlet in the head at the exhaust manifold. The exhaust manifold is different from a TD to the TF by the shape of the head outlet. Yes, a TD manifold will work but there is a difference. Speaking of round holes, the water passages in the block casting was changed from teardrop to round long before heads had round holes. What was the correct head gasket to be used for the round block to teardrop head ?? Russ

The round hole block was indeed first used in a TD with engine XPAG/TD2/17969 on the 9 July 52, and the round hole head in engine XPAG/TD2/22735 on the 26 Nov 52. A mixed combination uses an oval hole gasket.
However, according to the parts lists, the round hole head, on it's own, was already used in the TD Mark II engines, starting with engine XPAG/TD3/17029 on the 9 June 52.
(I also have the engine numbers and dates for the same Y type changes)
