MG TD TF 1500 - 5/8x14 die
So the powder coater must have dropped one of my TD front spindles as I can't start the nut on without cutting the threads. I tried to take a jewelers file and dress the starting threads to no avail. Looks like a 5/8 x 14 thread. Anyone know where I can find one or have one to loan for a small fee? |

I have one that I don't expect to use in the next little bit. Send me your mailing address at my email address shown above. I can probably get it the mail tomorrow. Bud |

A suggestion... take a 5/8 x 14 nut (preferably a used and no longer 'nice' one) and cut it in half... then put both halves on either side of the base of the spindle and tighten a hose clamp around the halves, leaving room to get a spanner on it... then use a wrench to turn the nut off the spindle. If the threads aren't too fouled up this may straighten things out for you. Another alternative is to use a thread restoring file - if used carefully this will remove the bits of misaligned threads and get it close enough so you can get the nut started. I'd hesitate to use a die on the spindle as the chances of getting it started straight and true to the threads is really slim and you may end up trashing the spindle. |

WA - I think that I may have a 5/8 - 14 nut if you want to try Kevin's suggestion. E-mail me at SUfuelpumps@donobi.net Cheers - Dave |

Trick with a surplus nut is cut 1/8 deep grooves longitudinally through the thread at 120 degree increments with a hacksaw. If necessary grind the back of the blade so it will fit through the nut. The grooves provide a space for any swarf that is cut by the grooves sharp edges. |

Yes, that's kind of the trick with my 'split nut' method as it naturally has two slots where you split the nut. You could, of course, add more slots easily by cutting them in the nut (and would not need to cut down the hacksaw blade). |

thanks everyone for your suggestions. I've heard of this trick just yesterday with cutting an existing nut and using it as a chaser. The idea Kevin suggests two cut the nut completely, applying it to the spindle and then backing it off makes great sense since you are not running a potentially galled nut in thus possibly ruining more thread. I will try Buds die first and see if it will start properly and if not then I will certainly try the split nut method. Makes me mad when shops don't fess up to their mistakes. Thanks again everyone. Your all a swell bunch. Bud , You have mail... Cheers Bill Chasser Jr TD4834 |

You'll have it on Friday. Bud |

Heat the thread with a welding torch and wire brush the softened powder coating off. If you are using a split die you can open it up by screwing in the centre screw and use this first and then tighten it up for further runs. Jan T |

Hi Jan There is no coating on the threads. the powder coater dropped the spindle on the ground damaging the threads. thanks for the advice. |

Hi Bill, You are lucky - my plater dropped one of my sidelamps into the chrome bath. I explained they were rare, expensive items and he said if I could find another he would plate that and my windscreed frame and brackets for free. I didn't tell him I have several lamps as spares. He did a super job on the frame and replacement lamp but when I went back with a few more parts last week he presented me with the original sidelamp - now with the best coating of chrome I have ever seen. They had foud it when draining the chromic bath. It had been at the bottom for six weeks. Jan T |

I Just wanted to give a big Thanks to Bud for the use of his die. Cleaned up the spindle this morning and finally put the finishing touches on my front suspension sans the alignment and torque values for the pan pivot bushings. That will have to wait until the engine and trans go in a few more months from now. Still trying to get this car together and sorted before GOF 2015 sponsored by the SVMGCC. This is going to be a well run event. |
