MG TD TF 1500 - 5 Lug bolt on wire wheels

I had a friend tell me today that there are 5 lug bolt on wire wheels that will fit my TD. I've never heard of these being available. Anyone have info on this or is this a completely wrong statement. It sure would be nice to not have to change hubs ect.

They do make them, but I am not sure if they make them with the proper bolt spacing and offsets.

Try looking at Dayton wheels.

A member of a local car club has a set. Ugly as can be, IMHO. They look like they came off of a mid 30's Ford. They bolt on over the OEM drums and increase the track. The also have no provision for accessing the brake adjuster. Bud

Moss has a kit for TDs, but I don't know if it's for 5 lugs or not. Supposedly comes with new hubs, drums, 5 wheels etc. With chrome wheels, very expensive but much less with painted wheels. PJ

The Moss kit is the TF bits you would convert a drum car to a wire wheel car. Works on TD's and TF's. For the TD they also give you a special adapter for the spare carrier.

Thanks, I think I'll pass on the bolt-ons and at some point plunge in for the real thing. Sort of waiting for someone locally that wants to go back to steel wheels or is going to sell his car where I can swap out wheels before the sale. Probably not going to happen and I'll end getting new. Mark

Mark, I've seen some of these and they look slightly better than wire wheel hub caps. Go with the knock offs. I'd like to put spokes on my 53TD but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I haven't decided on paint or chrome.

Mark, I forgot to also mention there also is a bit of work converting the spare tire carrier.

The Boranni (spelling?)company in Italy will still make a set with adaptors that bolt on using the lug nuts and can also supply a spare tire adaptor. You might have to borrow money to get them however, as they are very proud of them.

Bill, Ive got my finger on the trigger but haven't brought myself to do it yet.

Hi Mark,
Motor Wheel Services here in the UK make bolt on wire wheels suitable for the TD & TF. These increase the track by about 3/4".
They also make bolt on wire wheel hubs but I don't know if these increase the track.
I have seen the bolt on hubs and you have to cut the studs after tightening them on to avoid fouling the wheel.
The bolt on wires are not obviously wider to the eye. They are also outer laced and do not need rim tape

Gentlemen,

Gentlemen,
Most Arnolt MG’s were fitted with Italian made Borrani wire wheels which used “bolt-on” hubs that fitted onto the standard wheel lugs. They were still proper “knock off” wheels with splined hubs held on by a center nut. The wheels were offered in a couple variations. When fitted to an Arnolt, they were most often a steel rim, hub and spokes painted silver. Arnolt also offered them available separately as a retro fit to regular MG TD’s as an aftermarket accessory. The aftermarket wheels were offered in the painted steel and also with polished aluminum rims with chrome spokes and hub. Note that in the photo attached, the outer flange of the center hub is larger than that on the more common Dunlop wheel, this was to cover the stock TD wheel nuts that held the splined hubs on. Also the center spline hole is the larger 58mm diameter like a Jaguar (or a Ferrari!) than the standard Dunlop 48mm. I am lucky enough to have a set of the painted wheels on my ’53 TD that came off Mike Goodman’s Arnolt convertible.

A Peddicord: Next time you have your tires off I think you will notice your rims are actually stainless steel. They polish up real nice.

One way to test it is to put a magnet up to them. If the magnet sticks they are probably regular steel. If not they are stainless. Its not a perfect test but in the high 90%.

I have had my wires on since 2007 and love them. They are 72 spoke daytons with british hubs from England. They are also tubeless.
Tom Maine

They used to have these wheels at one time. PJ

Paul: I suspect the back set is what Bud is reffering too.

The front set are Borrani's in stainless and chrome. Plus Alfin drums. Pretty classy.
