MG TD TF 1500 - 5 Speed TD conversion question

Background:
I got my 5 speed Datsun 210 conversion from Steve Neal back in 2010. I located the raw transmission in Chihuahua, Mexico.
I know the Datsun tranny is like hens teeth now and Steve Neal has long since retired.

Question:
A TD owner in my club is interested in converting his car. I would appreciate some opinions/advice/research/etc. on what's currently available and good.
Thanks,
Mort

Mort,
Peter Gamble runs Hi-Gear Engineering in the UK.
( http://hi-gearengineering.co.uk/) I believe he is the supplier for Moss and Quantum Mechanics. Hi-Gear's system is based on the Ford T9 5sp Transmission. Early configurations required the Engine be moved forward about 10mm, so the Trans cleared the Frame Cross Member. A new design requires a piece of the Cross Member cut out and replaced with a Heavy Aluminum Casting that supports the Rear Trans Mount. The advantage being the engine can remain unmoved. A new Bell Housing and Clutch Disc is supplied. The original Throw-Out Bearing, Pressure Plate(Clutch Cover), and Clutch Linkage is reused.
The T9 ratios are close to the MGT, so the box works well with the XPAG/XPEG.

................ MGT........T9
1st Gear.....3.187......3.36
2nd Gear.....1.84.......1.81
3rd Gear.....1.31.......1.26
4th Gear.....1.00.......1.03
5th Gear......--..........83

The Ford T9 was used extensively in Europe in the Ford Sierra and I believe the Capri. It made it to the States in limited numbers in the Mercury Merkur.

Order direct from Peter Gamble at HiGear. Prices are on the website...convert them to dollars, add about $400 for shipping and customs. The savings in price are well worth the short additional wait.

A picture of a Ford Type 9 fitted to my TF using a bell housing from Andy King - mgsparesandrestorations.com. Price was about £300.

My daughter worked for 2 years in Durango Mexico, Driving around the countryside there, I saw quite a few Datsun 210s (not the 210B). I had occasion to look inside a few and sure enough, there was a standard 5-speed going begging. Saw a couple of 4-speed g/bs too.

Are parts still available for the Datsun box? I know repair kits for the Ford one common and ineensive.

Have just installed a T9 5 speed, using a “homemade” conversion kit - what a pleasure to drive.

Now I am in the process of converting a more modern Getrag 5 speed gearbox. This is more of a challenge, as it is very tight, but it looks possible to squeeze it in without relocating the engine, or interfering with the cross member and replacing the spigot bushing. I will know for sure in a few weeks time. If it works out well I might be able to make one for you, if you are interested. I estimate the price will be in the order of USD 2 500, including supports and steel cover. I believe a cover in steel will stabilize the chassis better than a cover in plastic.

With the experience from my first conversion, I have made one more T9 conversion, with 10 mm. shorter housing and with a 5/8 shaft to fit the standard spigot bushing. This will not require relocation of the engine or interfering with the cross member. Some has argued it is not possible, but with some modifications in the bell housing it works.
