MG TD TF 1500 - 51TD Exhaust pipe crimped
I just noticed that my exhaust pipe is seriously crimped near the end, someone at some time must have tried to use a jack on it or something like that. I would estimate that the crimp reduces the crossectional area of the flow by about 70% or more. Does anyone think that this could cause backpressure or affect engine performance much? The car has been running fine but I wonder if I replace that section would I get improved performance? Your two cents welcome :) |

Goeff, 70% is a lot!! I'me sure it would improve things to fix it,,, Is it stainless ?? How far fron the end?? Steve |

Geoffrey, I would replace that section asap. To much back pressure can help burn valves and reduce power and increase fuel consumption. Not good for the engine in any way. PJ |

Thanks, I will see what I can do about either fixing it or replacing it asap. |

It the crimp isn't more than say 2" or so from the end of the pipe, I'd just cut it off with a pipe cutter and call it good. If it's much deeper than that, then I would replace that section. |

It's about 12 inches in from the rear stainless piece. A quick check on Moss and the ONLY pipe I could see is the full stainless steel set for sale at $350. No, I can't afford that right now. So the easiest thing I imagine is to replace the tube from the muffler to the rear stainless tip. So where can I get an appropriate piece? Will any muffler shop just sell me the tube? What size do I need to fit? Thanks; guess I'm a total exhaust system newbie :) |

Take that piece off the car and take it to a muffler shop. They should be able to match the pipe and put the little bends in it for not a lot I would think. |

My truck which I bought new in 93 had the muffler go bad, I took it to a muffler shop and they replaced it with duel pipes for under 100 bucks. A tail pipe shouldn't cost very much in my estimation. They can even make a short pipe to slide over and clamp or weld to the cut off section. PJ |

thanks LaVerne, that's what I'll do. |

Goeff, Any FLAPS (Favorite Local Auto Parts Store) will have all sorts of pipes in various lengths and adapters,, probably cheaper than a Muffler Store.. STeve |

If you can get to the area from the inside, you may be able to get a torch on that area on the outside, and draw the pipe back into shape. If you can't manage it, nothing is lost. ...CR |

After a little more research, I think what I will do is cut the pipe on either side of the crimp and install a "flex" connector; about $15, and meant to be easily bendable. It's made of braided stainless steel and is fully sealed (supposedly) and can be easily bent around the angle I need it to go. Should solve the problem nicely! Now I just need to take it off and make sure I get the right diameter flex connector. These appear to be 1 3/4 pipe, I think... will remove and measure tomorrow. |

It's getting more complicated. The whole thing is rusted together (I had to remove the entire exhaust system from the manifold back to the tailpipe to even get to it). The tailpipe piece is not only rusted to the muffler, it's got cracks near the muffler connection. So I guess I've got to replace the whole pipe. I can just cut the piece off where it meets the muffler, but I'm not sure I can get the section that fits inside the muffler end out. I'm thinking I should just take it to a muffler shop and have them cut and clamp new pipe to it. I have neither the tools nor the skills to bend the pipe myself. |

Just finished installing the new tailpipe. It's always good to go through a system completely, at least to evaluate it; once I decided to replace the tailpipe, I found I had to remove the entire assembly up to the exhaust manifold. In the process I found that 2 out of the 3 mounts were completely gone (the clamp below the transmission mount had come off completely and the rubber hanger behind the muffler was broken. For $60 I got a new tailpipe, two new rubber hangers and two new clamps and reassembled the whole thing. It fits well! Here's a pic of the crimp on the old tailpipe. It's where the pipe is meant to bend around the sidecurtain box; I wonder if some inept garage mechanic just put on a straight piece and then bent it by hand, creating the crimp, in the first place! When the muffler goes, I'll probably spring for the complete stainless assembly; for now, this will last me a few years. ![]() |
