MG TD TF 1500 - 5.44:1 MKII Differential

In looking at the AKD834 TD Service Parts List I came across an odd differential gear set listed in Section R, the MKII Supplement. It says that, up until Chassis No. 12285, there was a Rear Axle Assembly-ratio 9/49. This would be a 5.44:1 ratio. The crown wheel and pinion set was Part No. 101593.

Can anybody shed some light on this? I can only guess that it might have been of interest to folks doing hillclimb competitions. Bud

That’s a new one. Have never heard of that ratio before nor seen one advertised

What would be the reason for such a low differential ratio? The WWII willys jeep only had a 4.88 differential. The standard TD was something like 5.1 I think.
Bruce Cunha

Bud Kruger’s note about the unusual ratio (5.44 (9/49) available for the T-Series axle reminds me that there are now additional ratios available, and I thought this might be a good time to review the options.

As most of you know the T-Series CWP is the same for the MGA and the MGB, and are interchangeable with both the banjo and split axle diff casings, so an announcement of new ratios for the MGB should translate down to our cars; hence:-

5.44 ~ 9/49 Super stump-puller see AKD834R
5.143 ~ 7/36, standard on Y-Types
5.125 ~ ordinary stump puller and std on ALL TDs
4.875 ~ Std on all TFs
4.625 ~ SPECIAL! 37/8 CWP available from Mad Metrics - £330
4.55 ~ Morris Minor Std. and XPAG Tuning Manual option
4.3 ~ Standard (early) MGA
4.10 ~ Late MGA 1600 Mk II
3.9 ~ Standard MGB
3.7 ~ optional MGB

Don't confuse the above CWPs with those of the TA to TC. Those axles were of ENV manufacture and aren't interchangeable with the split and banjo axles of our MGs.

The 4.875 was an option on TD's and standard I believe on most MKII TD's. The 4:55 was an option on the MGA as well as the TF
L E D LaVerne

As LaVerne states the 4.875 was TD/c std ratio. The 4.55 and 5.125 were optional on the TD/c as well.

The 9/49 ratio mentioned in AKD834 might be a typo.
CWP part# 101593 is also mentioned in my 1948 Morris Oxford MO parts list but with a ratio of 9/41. (4.555:1)
Just my 2cts...

Nick it would be more than just a typo as the ratio matches the tooth count on the CW&P based on Buds OP
