MG TD TF 1500 - 5.7L LS in my TF

Jack and Brian Collins at Ceres Motorsports in Oviedo Florida finished my TF-1500 chassis yesterday. New everything plus beautiful epoxy sealer / urethane paint. I almost cried with joy when I saw it.

These guys do outstanding work and specialize in MG performance modifications.

They say that a 5.7L LS engine would make my TF the "King of the Road" (to steal a slogan from Lucas.) It'll be a tight fit, but I believe they can do the job.

They are currently installing a supercharger on a late model TR3, and a throttle body fuel injection system and custom manifold on an MGB. Their "MG-Z roadster", an MGB with a custom performance-modified 2003 Ford Focus Zetec 2.0 L DOHC 16v engine, has been featured in a number of magazines.

What should I do … 1500cc or 5700cc?

Why,supercharge it but a v8?

OK, I'll bite. ;-)

Why not go with an LS7 or 9. Might as well go all the gusto! If you stick with the 5.7, find one with metal heads and block.

Starting to look very nice. Have fun with it.

IMHO

If you leave the 1500 CC in there you have an MG-TF worth between $23K and $32K

If you put a big block in, you have an abortion unlikely to return more than $10K.

You will also need a stronger transmission, Rear end, and rear suspension.

I doubt the front suspension will handle the extra weight.

OOPS! don't forget you also need to stop. Power Disc's all around.

I see things like this on Craig's List often. They don't sell very well.

You will have what used to be a TF worth 10K that will have cost you 30K to create

Rebuild it the way it was. When you're finished you'll be really glad you did. So will the next owner and just about everyone else who sees the car. Cheers

Hi Lonnie, I think you need to go bigger. You can get a 6.2L Hellcat crate engine for just under $15K! George

Well, maybe I exaggerated a little …

My original XPEG will power the TF. Jack and Brian had a Fiberglas mock-up LS engine sitting in a corner of the shop, so we sat it into the chassis for kicks and giggles. You gotta admit, it looks pretty cool. I have a new respect for the abilities of hot-rodders who drop big engines into tiny spaces.

Next step to run brake and fuel lines and to install the pedals before the engine returns from the builder.

Then it's back to the wood.

You should have posted 24 days earlier Lonnie!

Lonnie you gave into your ruse too quickly. I wanted to see who would throw a temper tantrum. Lol My high school buddy wanted me to but my methanol injected 409cid Chevrolet into TD-4834. This was as close as it got. Just for giggles

Get that thing out of there. :-)

I think a most sensible engine conversion is easy, affordable and performs well. My cousin installed a 1960 cc MGB engine in his TF with some go-fast stuff on it, a 5 speed and an MGB rear axle. He weighed the car after the conversion and it still came in under 2000 pounds.

He also had the the engine dyno-ed and it was reading 158 HP at 3750 RPM, and that's with alternator & water pump.

He says its all the power you need. No tire-shredder but it has great acceleration and can cruise all day at 80.

Think you’re all wrong: elegance (and perhaps a shoe horn) is what’s needed.

I had a friend put a corvette engine on a TD chassis back in the 60's.
He ran it at the local drag strip for two weekends and then he found all kinds of weld cracks in the frame. Better have a modified frame.

This morning I saw a photo of a TD with a 2.4 L Jag. engine.

Took some drastic surgery to do it though - that is a very long engine. Goodness knows what has been hacked about underneath.

What ever happened to the TC featured in Road and Track in the 50's, with a Bugatti engine? Disappointing that today the engine would be worth 7x what the car would be worth!
