MG TD TF 1500 - A Printer For Plastic Parts?
The new technology developed not to long ago in printing various parts out of, I think, plastic, would be great if some parts unavailable for our cars could be made. What brought this to mind was I need a wiper knob for my TF and they are NA. Should this be an avenue to pursue? Is anyone doing this as a business yet? Be great if it's possible. Thoughts on this? See Jay Leno's web site. He's been doing it for a long time now. There is a good video there somewhere. |

Bakelite is not really plastic. It has a different look, feel and density. If you Google 3D printers I am sure you can find one in your area. You have to supply them a 3D cad file and some services can make one by scanning an existing object and then editing it. You will probably end up with a $300 knob. |

I agree Chris on the cost, it would probably be quite high. As I understand, Hugh doesn't even have one! I'm missing one and I have not a clue where to get one. Just looking for any possibility. PJ |

I have a 3D printer which can print in PLA or ABS. I have made a few parts for my PA which were originally bakelite, however, most 3D printers work by extruding a plastic filament, and usually lay it down with a slight spacing between layers and tracks. Thus, it is often not possible to obtain a really smooth exterior surface. So far I have not been able to get the kind of density I would like in order to smooth and polish satisfactorily. |
