MG TD TF 1500 - A Wind(shield/screen) Issue
25 or thirty years ago, during the move from Pennsylvania to Wisconsin the Windshield glass on the TD was broken. It was replaced in WI but the job was poor. I am trying to rectify this and replace the WW electrical feed. I have removed the bottom bar of the Windshield/Windscreen and whit is in the channel has me puzzled. I looked at Dave B’s site and I see him using a wide rubber packing. Most likely form Moss. I have purchased my packing from Abingdon and it is cloth covered on one side. (Purple at that!) I find that in my channel there appears to be more than just packing. Directly under the glass, which penetrates just a bit, there is packing with a cloth cover. (Cloth to the outside). But under that there is some additional packing. It does not have the cloth backing and appears to be folded to form a triple layer. In essence this (additional) packing seems to space the glass in a similar manner to the WW electrical wire. In the attached picture the frame on the left shows the two kinds of original? packing, The cloth backed is in front the folded additional is sticking out of the frame. In the right frame, a bit blurred, you can see the folded packing. Also is the purple form Abingdon. Now I don’t know if this is original or was inserted in Wisconsin but I doubt the glass I have will fit without it. Should it be there? ![]() |

When reassembling my windscreen after rechrome, there was a small gap at the top. Same piece of glass, it just seemed to ride lower in the frame assembly. Glenn Lehnard (Glenn's MG Repair) said he has had to shim the glass up from the bottom before, and that is what I did. Very possibly the extra stuff was used to do that. Purple-seriously? George |

Thanks George I had not opened the Abingdon packing. the purple is just a covering over the rubber. There is cloth on one side but its black. Jim B. |

Jim You will find that your new glass will not be quite as thick as the original and also the rubber gasket may well be slightly smaller in profile. I would suggest that you pack the screen along the bottom rail to give a reasonable fit into the top rail. Before you finally fix the glass into the frame visit your local glazing shop and get a good quality black rubber sealant. Apply a good layer on all surfaces before inserting the glass, allow to dry for 4-5 days and then trim of any excess with a craft knife. BOL Mick 52 TD |

One other question. The second lowest fastener on my winshield frame is a Phillips head, pan head, sheet metal screw. I have ordered nes angle brackets, and a box of SS sheet metal screws, but, in retrospect, I am not sure what should go there. Self tapping seems wrong although they were firmly fastened. Can anyone confirm what should go here? ![]() |

JA. Same as the top. Two flat head machine screws. |
