MG TD TF 1500 - Accessory temp gauge location (Early TD)

Does anyone have an early dash that has a factory temp gauge installed out board of the Speedometer? I need information regarding the mounting location. Also pics would be helpful if one can provide them. I also need to know what size the hole was in the subdash and whether accommodation was made for lighting of the gauge. Was the dash routered but leaving several plys to accommodate a light for the gauge? Again pics would be helpful.

Bill I may be wrong but I don't believe that early TD's had a factory installed temp gauge. If they were fitted they were probably done at the dealership. Cheers

Peter is correct. We added one to our TD, which required cutting hole in both inner and outer dash I recall. I may be able to look for my old dash and measure. I would call that a proper period accessory. Do you have the gauge already? George

Bill. You can use my dad as it is out of the car. Actually, both are out. Has the aux. Temp gauge.

Here's the dash of TD1414. Purchased off of the floor at the TD introduction in New York in 1950. Whether installed by factory, or dealer, is unknown. Bud

Another option is to install the later combination water temp. Oil pressure unit. No holes to drill on the dash. I've done this to early TDs.

And here is still a different solution on TD8986. Believed done by the distributor or dealer on Long Island NY.

John. I have seen that version on a few cars. Since you have to take your hand off the wheel anyway to operate the dipper, It should not matter if you do it with your left or right hand.

Here is where the temp gauge is located on my 1950.

PS. That should say Dash in my upper post. My dad's still around (at age 92), but I don;t think he will be able to help with the temp gauge.

When the time comes that i can no longer see old Frankies (TD2103) moto-meter, i plan on installing the dual gauge. No cutting required, and besides, it will be a whole lot easier!!
