MG TD TF 1500 - Advice on Starter switch purchase
G/day all, my starter switch is a bit iffy and feel I should get another, anyone know of a decent product on the market. Thanks George |

I had problems with my starter switch which turned out to be the pull cable. Whilst I was trying to sort the thing out I considered fitting a solenoid switch but couldn't find a suitable spring loaded switch for the dash board. Correct starter switches crop up on eBay every day but search for "Starter Switch" without any reference to MG. They were used on numerous 1950s British cars. Jan T |

There are two types available that look much like the originals. One has black rubber insulation around the terminals, much like the originals, and other has a nylon moulding. I've heard that the nylon type (which most suppliers seem to sell) are less satisfactory. The alternative to both of these is to fit a geared starter motor - they usually have a solenoid built in, thus avoiding the old style starter switch altogether, if you wish. Dave H |

dAVE, >>The alternative to both of these is to fit a geared starter motor - they usually have a solenoid built in, thus avoiding the old style starter switch altogether, if you wish.<< HOW IS THIS WIRED/CONNECTED ?????I'm assuming that you mean by saying "avoiding the old style starter switch altogether" even the "pull" is not used ??? There is usually an additional terminal. It carries no significant current so you can use a simple push switch. Instructions should be provided. Yes, it means that you can dispense with the crude cable pull switch altogether. Dave H |

I second Steve's question. Jim |

I eliminated the pull starter due to arthritis in my hands, and use and MGB starter solenoid and a push button switch in a Lucas panel under the dash. There are two types of MGB solenoids. One with a remote start button on it (handy for working under the bonnet) and another without. I originally had the one with the remote switch on the solenoid, but it stuck engaged one day, and I was grateful that the ignition was not ON. I switched to the type with no remote button.

I've often wondered if a relatively modern solenoid (which I think is just a heavy duty relay but I could be wrong - see earlier post regarding condensers) activated by the pull knob wouldn't be pretty cool. Minimal current going through the old original pull knob switch so once the contacts were cleaned up it might last forever and the no-name (probably whatever NAPA has) handling the current to the starter motor. Just musing again. Jud |
