MG TD TF 1500 - Alternate source for Crankshafts

I believe that Phoenix Crankshafts (see:- http://www.phoenix-crankshafts.co.uk/index.html), are probably the only supplier of XPAG/XPEG cranks, but its my understanding that at present, both Moss and Abingdon have no inventory.

A few months back I seem to recall a remark on this forum about another supplier of cranks for our cars. Can anybody refresh my aging memory on this, or am I dreaming in technicolour?

Great Lakes Forge in Traverse City Michigan. They make forged cranks to customers specifications. Quantity,I don't know how many needs to be ordered. Price, I wouldn't have a clue, but they are there and still in business I think. PJ

I have no idea where these come from Gordon.

I also wonder about Moss' source since their supply of forged cranks ran out and they now sell a billet crank.
MG LaVerne

I believe Mouldex was mentioned as a supplier for XPAGs. Thinking that Dave Zyp had a relationship with them.Dan

Manley's cranks came from John Targett.

Unfortunately I received an email last week saying that John has passed. Not sure where Manley will be getting them now.

I heard that Mouldex was the only source now. Maybe I dreamed it? Check with Mr. Zip.

Summit Racing sells Manley crankshafts with free shipping on orders over $99.00. I believe Manley will still make a T crank and customize it to your specs. They'll set it up to use MGB rods and bearings if you prefer, or for a custom racing setup. PJ

this might help

Paul,

The "Manley" crankshafts available from Summit Racing are not XPAG/XPEG crankshafts.

The "Manley" crankshafts that LaVerne referenced above come from Manley Ford, an enthusiast and MGVR racer. Manley sourced them from John Targett.

I've written Manley this morning to see if he has another source...waiting on his reply.

Indeed the guy who previously made crankshafts for John Targett proved unreliable and very frustrating to deal with. So Moldex is now making my cranks to my specs and as of this morning I have two on order with them, both with MGB 5-main rod journals. I also provide billet rods, JE pistons, a very trick lightweight clutch and FW for the racing crowd, stainless headers etc.

I have Manley's set up as explained above. I can report the xpeg is transformed. Throttle response is amazing and she pulls similar to a blower (though some of that is due to Len's 3/4 race roller litter cam). I highly recomend the set up and working with Manley has been nothing but exceptional.

Many tnx to all of you for this valuable info. While I am not looking for a crank, this is for a friend who needs one for his XPEG, and I am just the messenger.

It seems that the Phoenix crank, now at $3,000+ is getting beyond the means of many T owners. Its good to have alternate sources
although some of these options impart racing costs; and hopefully someone like Moldex, can produce a reasonably-priced crank for everyday use.

Does anybody have any idea of the price of a Moldex crank?

Gord,

Have your friend contact Manley Ford for a price. I'm sure he can get them with stock rod journals...the only difference is the MGB rod journals are slightly larger in diameter than the XPAG/XPEG journals.

Web site is under construction, but there is contact information there.

Years ago, I talked to Crower Rod out of CA and they indicated to me that they could make a crank for our engines. You might give em a call.

Moldex will machine up a new crank for anything, any which way you want it- standard or MGB rod journals, stroker, long snout, knife edged counterweights, painted purple... In fact, they just showed me one going to Australia with 5 main journals, don't ask me why! (but only 3 mains were machine).

I got a special price break a couple of years ago and gave $2100 for ours. Call Manley or Moldex for a price.
