MG TD TF 1500 - Ampco Top End Oiler

Newbe ask's; Is anyone using a top end oiler?

Hardly anyone today, although in the old days people swore by them - more the Marvel Inverse Mystery Oilers than the Ampco. They were supposed to lubricate and cool the valve guides and cylinders.

Of course, there were those who swore by water injection, as well. A TF was sold here a few years ago equipped with water injection.

I use one on the Judson Supercharger on my Morris Traveler... they were supplied with the superchargers. They work well to lube the supercharger's vanes, and I can see how they might help lube the valves in a non-supercharged motor.

Experience here with the Marvel Mystery Oil Oiler was a lot of plug fouling, and that was with a proper adjustment of the feed rate. Not worth the trouble and aggravation, IMHO.

I have simply added MMO to the fuel tank. It did help in preventing valve seizures on fresh headwork. I had valves seize on a Laystall and an iron head with steel guides. The guide clearances were to spec when installed. After several tanks of petrol and the MMO there was no other issues. I have since discontinued the MMO

Many years ago and I mean many, I was sent to school for F4U Corsairs. They had water injection on them for an extra boost when in a dog fight. It had a time limit of a few seconds as the massive heat generated on the exhaust collector ring could cause it to crack. It had very little benefit below full throttle.
I know a story about this system when used by one of our pilots trying to get away from a Zero after his ammo was gone, little long so Ill save it for another time, but it is a true story. PJ
