MG TD TF 1500 - another originality engine question

I'm rebuilding a late 52 TD motor, almost a 53. The thermostat housing elbow is aluminum and the one on my 49/50 TD #0844 is steel, my 48 TC is bronze/brass. I've tried to find something in archives about changes to this part and nothing pops up. The TF I don't think uses this part. The aluminum does not have a PN, the steel is SK 43450 and the bronze no PN either. Is there an evolution to this part? Curt

Curt, aftermarket thermostat housings were/(are) aluminum. It's not an OEM housing. Bud

I was under the impression that the TC elbow was originally aluminum and the ones for the TD were cast steel. By the way they are not interchangeable as the one for the TC has a considerably steeper angle.

Hi Curt, did you receive my J type email?

Curt,

Originally the TF elbow was cast manufactured in aluminium.

Hugh - What you say makes perfect sense now that I think about it. I got the TC in 2002 so I can't say what has or hasn't been done to it. If TC's came with aluminum elbows it is very possible it eroded away and was then replaced with cast bronze aftermarket. I don't however know how this 52 got an aluminum elbow, could be it was replaced also, who knows. My thinking now, armed with this new info, is to put the aluminum on the TC & the bronze/brass on the 52 TD. Now the world is a happier place. Curt.
