MG TD TF 1500 - Another production change

Working on my differential I noted it does not have a heavy bracket that is on later TD's.

Here is the bracket.

What would go there? Or did they use this differential on other cars.

Was used on other cars

I saw somewhere that the same differentials were used on Y models and that bracket was a shock mount. My 51 TD actually has a YB differential.

What other cars Bill? Identifying them could be helpful for parts.
Bruce Cunha

Could be Tim, but mine is a 50 and does not have it. The Y ended production in 51. As Bill said, could be another Nuffield line that used the same differential and they added the bracket.
Bruce Cunha

The Morris J/JB vans used a variation of our axle. I think the were narrower and had tubular shockers on those brackets.

For what it’s worth my 54 (March) TF has the same bracket and very substantial piece of kit it is too

Bruce, as we hear so often, the factory used what was available. I believe the Y series actually ran from 1947 to 1953. I don't see why excess Y Type axles couldn't be used on TDs as needed.

Here is some information about this topic from a guy who should know, Dave Clark: "Posted 03 March 2017 at 19:51:23 UK time
I've done over 100 conversions/ overhauls of the TD-TF-Yb rear ends.I have seen a good number of stencils on TD-Tf axles so they were marking them for a reason. Perhaps to identify the gear ratios? Nick has it right. After December 1951 the TD-TF axles used were built with the YB triangular bracket installed even though the TD-TF cars never put it to use.All the early 1951 axles I've seen were BSF where the later 1952 an up were SAE

Because the YB was born January 1952 I prefer to think the YB used the later TD-TF axle. Just kidding
