MG TD TF 1500 - Anticipation of New Paint!
Sent the old girls sheet metal to the paint shop Monday! Now it's wait and wait! Last time I felt like this, the wife was delivering our first son! Anticipation is nerve racking, GRIN. Did I make the right choice in paint shops, will the color look right, should I this and should I that? Damn, hope all comes out well! PJ |

I usually have the local priest stop by and give it a blessing before it goes off on such a dangerous journey. ;) Hope it turns out great, Paul! |

Yes Paul, exciting and anxious times. This is the section of my restoration that took 9 months. I hope your guy does not get tennis elbow from all the block sanding, like mine did! Tom '54 TF |

Paul, Congratulations on getting to this stage of your restoration. Just a point-I always get the panel/painter to do a door ONLY before doing the whole car. This has a two(2) fold purpose.Firstly, you can check that you are actually enthralled with the paint colour selected and secondly to ensure the paint finish is to your(and agreed) required standard. When you go to peruse and pick up the panels and tub for the whole car, there should be not be any 'surprises' in finish quality. If there is, you can refer back to the initial work on the door standard that was 'promised' to you before the overall contract was signed! Cheers and good luck. Paul, I understand where you're coming from. I am inching closer and closer to sending my '54 TF to the body shop for some repair work and then paint. Of course there is apprehension as to what I'll have when its done even though I've had the shop do other work for me on other old cars. I think its more about my level of expectation and are we on the same page as to what I want and what I expect. I know I'm my worst enemy because I over think things. And, what am I going to work on when the cars not home? I better buy another Mg to work on! Ha! Good luck with your project and please don't forget the photos! |

Rob, He's painting the splash aprons, front and back, first for me to check the color and finish. From his work in the past, I have no doubts of the finished product. Only possibility is, the finish might be too good and exceeding the factory paints looks. He's very meticulous in his work and is always checking his employees work as the day goes on. He has 3 regular employees and all one guy does is wet sand. That must be a boring job. PJ |

Paul: Who is did the finish body work? If the painter did then hopefully he knows what his is doing and might have to make some corrections after he puts a bit of color on. If it was not the painter then prepared for what you might find. I have seen lots of paint jobs that the finish was applied properly and done well, but at a glancing angle you see all sorts of ripples and small dents that only show up after shiny color gets applied. Sometimes when you wet sand the primer its helpful to observe the finish at a low angle while pouring water over it to see these flaws. After looking at your other work I doubt you will have issues :-) |

I wish I could find a body shop in the NYC metro area that knows how to do wood and metal repair. Does anybody have a suggestion. Thanks in advance, Jim |

Chris, The body shop is doing the body work. He has and uses the most sophisticated equipment and techniques. I've seen his work on at least a half dozen custom cars and their all top shelf. I have no idea when the car will be done, but I'm not pushing him. PJ |
