MG TD TF 1500 - Arnolt heater on eBay

An Arnolt heater on eBay right now -item
172212539553. Only $10 buy it now! Seems physically large; also price seems quite low, or am I out of touch these days?

I see, sniffey. As Head of Interpol I am sending someone over to gether evidence on international thievery of lighting and heater parts. This one on ebay looks like one stolen from me in 1971. I know by the little mark in the lower left corner. Yep It mine. They steal so much from me I cant keep track any more.

Hi Gord.

My wife's MG has an original Arnolt heater and it is relatively large IMO. As the mechanic, it is also a pain in the backside making maintenance more difficult. I am thinking of removing it and telling her someone broke in our garage and stole it. Maybe, the same guy from eBay. :-)

Seems the Arnolt will fit nicely in a TD, but very tight in a TF. If it wasn't for originality, I would have gotten one of the new cube heaters that supposedly put out much more heat. I put a round Smith in mine to keep it period. PJ

Paul161 - I have a Smiths heater I would like to install. Have any pics or tips on the install?
How and where taping into the water flow. How did you hang the heater and going thru the firewall. Switching.

thx

M,

I have a Bosch in my TF and with it mounted as shown in the attached pic I am able to direct the heat to the most important location.....my wife's feet.

When you see Paul's under bonnet piping I think you will be impressed. I took his lead and pretty much did the same. It works very well. And I used 1/2" OD soft copper.

Dan Nordstrom

Thanks Dan Nordstrom, I should be able to mount mine about the same. What about coming thru the fire wall? Soft water hose or hard connectors?
And where to catch the water flow?

M Grogan

While you can build a heater with modern components that takes up less space and mounts up higher and thus is more out of the way, the original Arnolt heater looks pretty darn good installed!

M,

When penetrating the bulkhead I used the Triumph bulkhead fittings. You can use either the Moss #635--070 or, as most prefer, the 635-230. I was unable to use the latter due to the previous cut holes being too far apart.
For the hoses I went to my local NAPA store and purchased pre-molded hoses and fitted them as needed.

My piping was done with 1/2" od soft copper tube. I pretty much followed Paul Jennings plan and it worked well. You will need a branch pipe to complete the task. There are differences between the TD and TF. Not knowing what you have I can only offer you what I did on my TF. Note the cast iron Y-branch fitting. They are hard to find and rather pricey. Saw one on EBAY the other day for $70.00

Here are a few more pics.

Because the height of the Arnolt I would have to set it back closer to the shifter, where the Smith mounted vertically and more forward, like Dans. The piping goes to a Triumph duel connector on the firewall, worked out great. Here's a couple pics of the piping. PJ

Other side.

Paul161

Wow. Would like to see mine come out close to yours. That looks great. I have the TD so my take off water will run a little different. thanks for sharing.
I will order the Triumph bulkhead connector
#635-220 from Moss. I like the compact line up and can place it almost anywhere.
Had my Smiths checked out and is NOT a leaker. Just need to clean it up a bit.
My wife will be glad when I get it installed.

A heater in Arizona?????
I thought folks moved there so they didn't have to have it.
Dan Nordstrom

Well, the heater was probably installed in Colorado. On the other hand I like it because I can turn on the heater and help cool the engine on a hot day. :)
Geoffrey M Baker

Barb is from MN. Been here 15 years. Now anything under 70, she is cold. So here comes the heater in AZ.
M Grogan

How we got from an Arnolt heater on Ebay to all this is just good fun. This is a great place to chat.

Dan Nordstrom

I've posted the below picture several times. Its actually two pictures with the centre of the engine, cut out.

The feature of my heater installation, is that there are no pipes of hoses to fill the engine compartment.

I run hot side from the rear plate on the cyl head, into the heater, and return UNDER the exhaust manifold.

I usually get the argument that there's a counter-flow that meets in the middle of the cyl head, and you'd be absolutely correct. All I know is that it has worked since I installed in in 1954. And, a chap up the road from me, when he restored his TC a few years ago, put in the exact same system, and he too, keeps warm without problems.

If I had to do it again the only difference I would make, would be to use a modern, Mojave heater (https://www.flex-a-lite.com/mojave-heater-173.html).
