MG TD TF 1500 - Arnolt heater style, age question.

I recently purchased an Arnolt heater off of eBay. I already had a slightly different style Arnolt that I previously restored. I’m planning to put one in my TD if I ever get retired and start back to work on it. The other one will go into the TC to extend the driving season a bit. The question is, “Which heater is more appropriate for which car based on age/style of the heater?”

The first pic is obviously the front view and the second is the side view. I was unaware that there were differences before this. The resto work on the second heater is going to have to wait for warmer weather. The garage temp is barely above freezing and forecast is for about 14 Fahrenheit tonight I think. I lucked out in that both fans are good and the cores seem to be air tight.

Kirk,

This is the heater that was in my TD since at least 1965. I assume it is correct for my car a 52 TD. I wish now I would of done mine in original color but I will probably never go back and do it. Hope this helps.

Bill Chasser has a good collection of different Arnolt heaters. He should be able to give some input on age.

The one I have for my TD is pretty much square.

Kirk,

Looks like the Arnolt label on the gold heater is an original stamped label, although looks to be painted over. It's the only original one that I have seen. Declan Burns is developing a 3-D printed Arnolt label that looks exactly like yours. More info on the other MG T forum.

One of my Arnolt heaters has a stamped steel front like your gold one. The other has a cast aluminum front. As Bruce said, Bill Chasser can probably answer your question.

The Arnolt label on the gold heater is actually a thin, stamped, brass piece that is glued in I think. I got a bit over exuberant with the wire wheel and scratched it up when I was cleaning it up several years ago.

I’ve got the latest one cleaned and primed now. It looks much better than the earlier pics.

Rich,

I think that mine is the same as yours, minus what must be reddish paint over the indented areas in the brass label. My TD is a ‘53, so unless I get more confirmation, I guess the gold one will go into the TD. The other on didn’t clean up too bad. So, I guess it’ll go into the TC.

Thanks for the help guys!
