MG TD TF 1500 - Auster Tag Removal
How do you remove the Auster tag from the bottom windshield cross channel? I'm getting everything ready for the chromer and need to remove the tag, hopefully without damaging it. To put it back is another question. PJ |

PJ If it is held on with rivets - you could try to drill the heads of or even file away the spread part on the inside of the frame. http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/windscrn/wt_107.htm Rod |

It's held on with rivets, but I wouldn't try to drill them as their so small it would be quite a task. I believe their screw rivets with no flair on the back. The new ones from Moss have the holes drilled off a bit and have to be modified to rivet them on. You know, it's little things like that, that gets under my skin! How difficult is it to make the new tag exactly like the original with the holes in the proper place, their not building a battleship! Gee wiz. PJ |

I wouls use a Dremel Paul to have more control. Center pop the heads first to help the drill stay on center. Rod |

Done with lunch and heading back to the shop. Let you know what happens later. PJ |

Paul I was able to easily pry my tag off with a small thin screwdriver blade. I had the frame parts rechromed. The new Auster tag and the rivits I bought from Moss fit in perfectly. The new chrome may have filled the holes slightly and allowed for a tight fit. I believe I pressed the rivits in carefully with plain pliers. Tom '54 TF |

Tom, I got mine off without damaging the tag. But I'm probably going to buy a new one, cheap, and put this one away. Only question, does the new ones have Birmingham on them? PJ |

Yes. Bought from Moss last year. Tom ![]() |

I pried mine up with a very narrow and thin type of a putty knife. If you do it carefully, the rivets rotate as they come out of the hole and I didn't damage the tag. I think I even used the same rivets after the plating for remounting. |

Ok, here's my original and it appears to have a slight difference than the repo. Letters appear to be darker and are recessed. Not sure if the repos images are recessed. PJ

The repos are not recessed (etched). That's been a pain in my side for 40 years. I also note that yours might be all ready but that could be the wear and tear. The two blocks to the side have red in them but the repos are black there. I also note that yours does not have the (R) mark so perhaps the repos came about from MGA on and we are stuck with that? I am wondering if we could make an etching mask with yours as a sample and them etch to repo back sides correctly and install them upside down? |

Chris, How would you propose to make a mask of my original? PJ |

I have reached out to Lew Palmer who is an expert here but have not heard back from him yet. Using your image we can make a digital copy and then Lew somehow is able to transfer that in reverse to a sticky film that has the etching area removed. You rub the mask onto the part and then paint it with acid to eat away the un-masked area. After a few moments you neutralize the acid and you are left with an etched surface. Lew does this for windshield markings and I am hoping a similar technique could be used for aluminum by changing the etching materials. Just a shot in the dark. |
