MG TD TF 1500 - Axle Check Straps
Hi This back axle conversion is still causing me problems. I rebuilt the original springs, new shackle bushes all round, new spring rubbers etc. Apart from as previously mentioned I can hardly get the lock nuts onto the U bolts I now have another problem. Being a tight wad I decided to make my own check straps using the dimensions from the archives (Jim Rice 2006). When I tried to fit them with the car on the ground they are to short, if I try and squeeze them on by weighing down the rear of the car the axle is in permanent contact with the rubber of the strap. The distance from the chassis to the bottom of the strap is 8 1/4 inches, the distance form the chassis to the bottom of the axle is 8 3/4 inches. I have tried jumping up and down on the car to try and settle the springs further to no avail. Does the strap size seem about right at 8 1/4 inches or do I have to wait until the springs settle. I have not connected the shock link as I don't want the weight of the axle to be resting on the full travel of the shock absorber when I jack up the car. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. thanks Barry |

Barry, The strap is not supposed to touch the axle with the springs in the relaxed position. Are you working with a bare chassis or is the tub on? The bottom of my rear axle is 7 3/4" from the bottom of the arch in the chassis with the tub in place. At 8 1/2", your strap should not touch. Something seems amiss with the spring set up. PJ |

Here is my chassis in it's lightest configuration. The rebound straps are barely touching the bottom of the axle and a little push down on the chassis will show a gap between them. PJ![]() |

Hi Paul Thanks for the reply. The car has everything attached except tank and spare wheel( It is a running car). As I said I have just rebuilt the springs and put the original TD axle back in ( I bought it with an MGA back axle). Much to the amusement of my neighbours I spent 1/2 hour jumping up and down on the back of the car which seems to have settled the springs somewhat. I have now managed to attach the straps with a gap of about 1/4 inch in the rest position. Maybe it is just a spring settling thing, the back axle has been reassembled as per workshop manual with all new parts. Barry |

Well that's good Barry! Let's hope your problem is solved. Happy Holidays! Cheers. PJ |

I just put straps on my TD several weeks ago and used a ratchet strap wrapped around the frame and differential and drew down on it. This gave me the room to get the strap in place. I bought ones from Moss and seemed to be very good quality. Cheers Bill Chasser Jr TD4834 |

Barry I have disassembled my TF rear end numerous times recently owing to the issues identified with the incorrect diff pinion flange. Each time I installed the straps with the diff supported on a jack, attached the straps and then secured the diff with the U bolts. Not saying this will resolve other issues however it makes assembly simpler. Graeme |
