MG TD TF 1500 - Axle nut cost

I was quite taken aback by the high prices our suppliers want for the MGTD rear axle nut & washer!

Abingdon Spares has the BSF 11tpi 7/8 inch slotted nut (moss part 311-490) for $15.62. Moss has them for $13.xx.

But good news, you can get them for much less...
British Tools and Fasteners has the same item for $1.35 (part 2395).

Just a FYI for the price conscious.

You can also get the accompanying washer for $10.75 each at moss, or purchase the same dimensional product from McMaster-Carr in a pack of 5 for $10.39, or about $2 each.

GOEFFREY,
Just make sure that the nut you order will fit the axle that it is going to be installed on. Not all axles fit all axle nuts,,,,,some are different.

Roger Furneaux (Mad Metrics) also offers them. See:- http://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/pdf/madmetrics.pdf.

See FA013 & FA014 for £2 and £1 (don't why there should be a price difference between right & left hand threads). Seem like reasonable prices.

While you're at it, pick up one of Roger's magnetic T-Series sump plug. Only £5.50. Had mine in for years. Its always got something on it.

An update; I did purchase BSF 11tpi 7/8 nuts from British Fasteners. Bad news: they don't fit. They are indeed 7/8 inch 11 tpi (measured with a gauge) but for whatever reason, they just wont thread onto the axle. They claim to be BSF but my bet is that either they are a different pitch angle, or they are just poorly machined. I've written to British Fasteners and will let you know what they tell me; worst case, I'm out $1.35 ea plus shipping.
In the meantime, Roger Furneaux is getting some slotted nuts for me that we hope should fit, and at a better price than Moss. However, I should point out that Gordon's link is for FRONT axle nuts, not MGTD rear axle nuts. Roger doesn't actually list them in his catalog, but does have in stock NYLOCK nuts to fit, and is looking to get the slotted nuts for me.
Just an FYI for those interested.

Later TD axles have SAE nuts. I think most of the replacemtn axle shafts are threaded to the SAE spec. You may have an SAE axle.

Thanks David, I'll check that asap...

David a quick check shows that the later axles were indeed SAE - but 14 tpi... My axles are definitely 11 tpi...
hmmmmmm

I found out (the hard way) my TD has one of each (BSF & SAE)! Check both axles carefully! And just in case you don't know it, you can get a proper SAE "axle socket" at most auto parts stores. I didn't know there was such a thing until I needed one! No more pipe wrenches for me!

Both of my axles are 11 tpi, no question about it. Which makes them BSF if I'm not mistaken, because the later axles had 14tpi... and efh, although someone used a pipe wrench on these nuts (which is why I'm trying to get new ones) I have a 3/4 drive socket set which handles these nuts nicely...

GOSH DARN IT!!!!! I should have kept my big mouth shut!

EFH... MY APOLOGIES... you are exactly right... my LEFT axle is 14 tpi SAE and my RIGHT axle is 11 BSF.

sheesh.... well, now I know that the 7/8 11tpi bsf nuts from British Fasteners work just fine, if you're putting them on the RIGHT axle... lol.

Guess I need to order ONE SAE nut 7/8 14 tpi!

But the good news is, you don't have to pay $15 for the bsf nuts, you can get them for $1.35.

Now to check pricing on 14tpi sae nuts...

grrrrrrr!

McMaster-Carr has these:
95030A290 Zinc-plated Grade 2 Steel Slotted Hex Nut, Style A, 7/8"-14 Thrd Sz, 1-5/16"w, 3/4" O'all H
Cost: $6.37 for 5.

We'll see how well they fit!

Anybody need extra axle nuts? I'll have spares...
