MG TD TF 1500 - Bad day with the car
First I wanted to check out the coolant sensor but broke the tubing trying to get it out. So I was hoping to find how to get in touch with someone who repairs temp gauges and can calibrate. The oil pressure gauge workes fine. Then my tach seems to be reading high. I just put in a new reduction gear and it all seems to work smoothly but high. I don't have a way to check it. My dwell meter says for negative ground cars. But I know my speedo registers too fast and this makes it look slow. If I am correct then at 4000 rpm I am running a little over 40mph on the speedo which is actually about 35. So I figure either my clutch is slipping in high gear or maybe I have too small a pulley on my generator. To eliminate that can someone tell me what diameter the pulley should be? I am not ruling out the clutch slipping. But may as well check the easy things first. I do not feel like there is a definite pull when I push on the gas in 4th. I have driven some trucks that felt the same way and had to get the clutch replaced there. The car seems fine in the lower gears though. Not sure how else to test. Thanks for any help. |

Easy thing first : how to check for clutch slip . Gear in neutral . Start the engine Push hard on the brakes and at the same time engage the handbrake to max tension . Put car in first gear and try to drive away if the engine stalls while trying that you have no clutch problems. Other problems ? I am sure others will chime in here. |

TLW - "I don't have a way to check it. My dwell meter says for negative ground cars." Hook your dwell meter positive to positive and negative to negative - the tach function will work just fine. The dwell function will probably read the compliment of the angel - just subtract the reading for dwell from 90° and you will have your correct dwell reading. Cheers - Dave |

Thanks the car really pulls fine. I have to back it over my lift ramps and I get it to the incline, stop and it pulls it right over. So maybe not the clutch but the adjustment. I have been reading the archives on the rod adjustment. I did notice if I adjust the rod to get the pedal to have a little feel higher up, the engine does feel like it slips. So I adjusted it back to where it was. I will do the check with the brakes though. I am sure the tach reads high. A smaller pulley could cause that and also explain why I can not adjust the belt everyone else is using. A A larger pulley would help the adjustment and slow down the generator rpm. where can I find the correct size for this pulley? |

Thanks Dave I will try the dwell hookup. |

tl, my pulley when measured with a 6" steel rule measures approx. 3 3/16" i hope this is of some help. regards, tom |

Thanks. I will check mine. |

Just as I suspected. My pulley measures about 2-3/4 inches. So now the question becomes can I beta the right pulley on my generator. Does anyone have the shank size? If I can buy one that fits I will just do that. I guess if there is a key in there I could use that info also. Thanks for any help. |

Also still looking for info n someone who could fix my temp gauge. Thanks |

There is an article somewhere about grafting the tube and bulb from a new gauge onto your old one but, I haven't been able to find it yet. Someone will chime in I'm sure. Kirk |

moss sells a replacement pulley..you could measure your generator shaft and contact moss for the dimensions of their replacement pulley. regards, tom 433-660 $49.95 PULLEY, generator Note: The pulley and fan for early and late TD generators are interchangeable. |

TLW, You would be able to hear the engine rev up if your clutch is slipping, you will also see the tach give an up and down reading if the clutch was slipping, ,,,,,, and in a short while, you will probably smell something burning,,,, Try the test that Gerard suggested,, I doubt that you need and adjustment,,,, Have you hooked up with any members of the New England MG "T" Register Chapters in your area??,,, I'm sure they would drop over to "give a listen"!!! Slight typo,,,, Should have typed I doubt that you need ANY adjustment SPW |

i think i am going to check all the linkage under the car before anything else. i may find there is a lot of slop in the connections which force the pedal feel to be so far down. i know i changed one clevis pin on my TR and it made a world of difference in where the clutch engaged. |
