MG TD TF 1500 - Baggage rack locks spare wheel
Last summer, in heavy rain, I had a flat tyre. To get the spare wheel out was a challenge. I had to remove parts of the baggage rack and even the bumper. I don't expect to change tyres all the time, but if anyone has the same baggage rack, is it an easy way to get the wheel out from behind it? ![]() |

raymond, I have a similar Amco rack, and yes, you must remove the rack,, The only thing that is modifiable would be to shorten the wheel studs?? But I doubt that would help,,, SPW |

I have a similar rack on my TF, and by removing the two upper knurled knobs I can swing it down to a horizontal position for carrying larger items. When it's down i have clear acess to the spare. |

Raymond, I have the same rack on my TD. You should be able to undo the knurled knobs and withdraw the long threaded rod and then the rack, leaving the bumper in place, unless mine was somehow modified. By the look of it though, the lowest tube on your rack is bent which may mean the threaded rod is bent as well, or at least jammed, and may make withdrawing the rod difficult. Straighten the tub and inner rod, and all should be well. Warmly, Dave |

I missed the part about haveing to remove the BUMPER.. from you picture, it seems like the tire will clear the bumper,,, When I said I removed the rack I mean just as Dave indicates ,,, remove the long threaded rod and the rack can be removed,,,, The rack brackets stay in position on the car,,, SPW |

Raymond, I have the same rack on my 53 TD but I never had a flat tyre. I have a question regarding yours : I haven't the additional spare on the back (see pictures). It's an option ? Can you give me a picture of it ? I think that it is to put luggage without open the rack. Didier ![]() |

Didier, This is an accessory. And indeed you can put luggage on it without folding the rack. A couple of years ago I've bought the rack as well as this accessory from Bob Wrenn (Florida, USA), but I remember a thread some weeks ago in which he states that his supplier is out of business. Jasper, When I bought my rack from Bob Wrenn I had an option of a rack with the two side restraints or without them. I wanted to be able to carry something wider than the rack so I chose the rack without the restraints. I see from your photo that you have yours mounted with the restraints on the bottom instead of the top. This reversal makes the rack useful in either direction. Very clever. I wish I had thought of it and chosen that rack instead. I like that accessory that allows for carrying smaller items, without opening the rack If anyone has one for sale or knows where I can get one please contact me. Mort |

Jasper is right. Since you need extra support if you fold the rack down, I decided to keep the rack up all the time, and had this little thing made without having seen one before. So it was a surprise to see that a similar thing had been for sale. Here is a picture of the construction.

And Dave, thank you for that. I remember I spent a very long time getting the rod back once, but may I should take it out and straighten it. |
Raymond Wardenaer |
Thank you for your answer Jasper and Mort. If you have an other contact to buy this accessory, I will be happy. Otherwise, some detailed pictures in high resolution with dimensions will be perfect. You have my email in this latest post. Didier |
Roussel Didier |
Didier, I've promised Mort to email pics and dimensions tomorrow. I'll add your name to the list! Jasper |

Didier, If it isn't too much trouble, I would like to be added to that list as well. Thanks, Kirk |

I have the same rack and when I bought five new tires discovered that I couldn't get the spare off with the rack in place. Like everybody else, I pulled out the long rod and the bottom and removed just the rack. The rod didn't come out real easily but with some gentle pursuassion from a big rubber hammer it offered no more resistence. Buffed it a smidge with fine sandpaper to get rid of some rust and now it comes out and goes in with very little fuss. Jud |

Kirk, You've got mail. Jasper |

Jasper, Sorry I confused you with Didier earlier. Unfortunately I've searched my email and yours doesn't seem to have come through. I would be grateful if you could send it again. Thanks , Kirk |

Kirk, The message is only 580 kb, that should do it, shouldn't it? However, I gave it a second try. Let me know if it's allright now. Otherwise I'll post it on this BBS. Jasper |

Kirk, Just to be sure I've copied the requested information into this thread... Jasper Material = stainless steel It’s a rather simple design: 2 brackets connected with a rod by welding. Dimensions of the connecting rod: diameter = 16 mm, length = 61 cm. Dimensions of the 2 brackets: 16 cm top x 12 cm bottom with a straight angle (90 degrees), thickness 3 mm, on top curved around a rod of the luggage rack. The accessory holds itself by its curving around a rod of the luggage rack. I have secured both brackets to the lower rod of the rack using tie rips. That is to prevent bouncing (I don’t want to loose the accessory) and rattling and a little bit for purposes of anti-theft. I’ve done this because I have the accessory permanently mounted on the rack. Given diameters are in mm and cm, I suppose you can convert it yourself into inches if necessary;-) Attached a „technical drawing” of the accessory and a couple of pictures. ![]() |

And of course my "technical drawing"... Jasper ![]() |

We all thank you Jasper especially for the technical drawing. Mort |

Note the small curve on my bracket, it makes the bracket sit well, but it can still be removed. |

Jasper, Thank you so much for posting this. I still didn't seem to receive the email. Not sure why. I'm awhile away from undertaking this project, but I'll print this and save it for later. Thanks again, Kirk |

Kirk, Well, it's a long way from Holland to USA... ;-) Jasper |
