MG TD TF 1500 - Battery box holes

Do the two holes in the back of the box on the left side get grommets in them?

I have the complete Moss set of rubber for a TF and it does not have all the rubber needed and a couple grommets are the wrong size and one is not included at all. PJ

Got mine from AS and found they were larger than the holes so enlarged the holes. Luckily I had not painted the firewall.

Also the hole where the wiper cable goes through is the one that was missing from the set. The one that came off the car had a portion on it that gripped the cable sealing the hole completely off. Moss and B&G do not show this rubber. Anyone have a part number for this? Is it available? PJ
Paul S Jennings

Are these the holes? The bottom grommet has almost perished away on my car. Generally the firewall grommets are important if you want to keep your carpet stain free.

Thanks Matthew, yes that's one that is not in the Moss kit. Arrow in pic. The wiper cable hole grommet is also missing from the set. I thought of using a 1 inch antenna grommet if I can't get an original style, as most of those will flex and also grip the cable eliminating fumes. PJ

Here is mine.

Paul,

I have a new, correct grommet for the TF Wiper Motor
currently on my TF1250.I purchased it last year
from Brown and Gammons in UK.

It has a protruding 'nipple' (open end) through which the cable enters after exiting the Wiper Motor.

On Matthew's photo, the 'nipple' has only a very small
part of it left!

I just ordered this Lucas grommet from the UK. Actually I ordered 3. For the 1 inch wiper cable hole. I ordered 3 just to make the order a little more than the postage! Grin. PJ

The back of the battery box gets two bumpers in the holes. Someone mentioned where to get them, receiving so many replies on various questions, I forgot who mentioned it and stupidly I didn't record it. Any help? PJ

Abingdon Spares, I think they are the same plugs used in the wire wheel brake drums. George

Thanks George, Much appreciated! PJ

Hi guys
George, thanks for the tip on the brake drum rubber, fitting behind the battery.
Paul, seems you are working on this right now. If you confirm that George is correct, please report it here. Id's like to plug those up also.

George is correct. I think I had to slightly enlarge my holes to get the brake plugs to fit, but not by much.

Dont know if this company operates world wide definitely in the UK, "Element 14" which was formerly "Farnell".

If you search on "Cable Grommets" you will find sizes to fit all orifices and different patterns. A table has the facility for you to select panel thickness, OD and ID.

Chris,

You can reduce the diameter of the brake drum grommet
by careful use of a bench pneumatic linishing wheel.
They will then fit perfectly into the two(2) holes at the
rear of the battery box without the need to change the original diameter of the holes.

Rob: Good advice but my rear of battery box was so rusted and hacked up it got an overlay so a little reaming was OK.

I recently purchased a pair of battery box buffer rubbers reputedly either NOS (or more likely an exact AM copy). They are the same as those shown in this pic. They have a shallow rubber protrusion at the rear, about 1/2" in diameter, with a circular depression designed to allow the protrusion to squeeze through the hole & engage in the sheet metal at the rear of the box. (I should add that this is not my car as there is no way I'd own a white TD!) Cheers
