MG TD TF 1500 - Best source for piping
I'm fitting the body panels prior to paint. Some panels and wood have been replaced and there are holes to be drilled, tub to be shimmed, doors to be fitted, etc. I believe, though I may be wrong, that after getting all to fit satisfactorily, that I should also cut and fit the piping and paint it. The car was originally Ivory but I don't like it so it's going to be burgundy. Should I buy red piping so as to be close and paint it? Who has the best piping? I've perused the archives but have not found a definitive answer. Thanks, Jim

Jim, Not too hard to make your own piping. Just find the colour that will match the final colour of the car and get Marine vinyl. Polyester roping ( available at fabric stores) of the proper diameters, and a sewing machine. It is easy to make up the piping from 2-1/2" strips of fabric. ... CR

| If you can't match the piping to your paint it's possible to have the piping dyed. I have a couple of spray cans of vinyl dye that were perfectly matched to the body paint. The 1/4" rubber core I used is shown below. Cheers Peter TD 5801

To match my birch grey paint I simply brush painted the mid-grey piping with the same auto paint. I have yet to see any problems arising from this and the brush painting tends to leave a pleasant satin finish. I'm afraid that I do not have the faith in vinyl colours that Peter has. Matthew.

Yet to spray mine Matthew so I'll let you know how it goes. I've seen some pretty impressive results using good quality vinyl dyes. I have heard of paint cracking when used on vinyl so I decided to use the purpose made product. Cheers Peter TD 5801

When using urethane paints on piping you need to add a flex agent to it. Inquire at your automotive paint jobber. There are plenty of maroon/ burgundy shades in marine vinyls. I retained my original color ivory and did find a perfect match in marine grade to my paint
