MG TD TF 1500 - Bizarre oil pressure

Hi

As per my previous low oil pressure post I have renewed parts in my oil pump which were badly worn. As a belt and braces I also ordered a suppplementary spring for the oil pump. This

http://www.mgbits.com/contents/en-uk/p2482_Spring_-_Supplementary_-_Oil_Pump.html

I rebuilt the pump and fitted the normal relief spring and the supplementary spring. Oil pump primed and turned over for about 30 seconds without plugs I was ready for the big start. To my horror the oil pressure on start up rose and rose at 120psi I cut the engine expecting to see an exploded oil filter or oil spewing out of every conceivable joint. Fortunately nothing so I took out the supplementary spring and fired up again. This time normal 60psi.

The question is has anyone used one of these springs and found the same problem?

Barry , I never had the problems as you discribed.

For sure your oil pump works great, but two springs in the relief valve ??? Never done that .

Anyway your pressure is fine now enjoy the car this summer.

Shouldn't the bypass valve prevent such a high pressure?
Bela

Originally that extra spring was called a "60/80" spring. The BMC catalog from the 60's calls it a "booster spring" with part # 706/226. The BMC catalog from the 60's also lists it as NA, not available. A.S. lists one for sale, though I have not seen one of theirs. There has been quite a problem with the regular booster springs being all wrong in aftermarket, and likely the booster springs, too. Both the original and booster spring (60/80) had 13 windings. 120 psi is all wrong for a spring that is supposed to deliver 80 psi max. Pic is of known 1956 era (at the latest) springs.

If you don't want to fiddle with two springs, Just get the adjustable oil relief valve that Moss sells.

Hi

Thanks for the replies.

Bela I think the extra spring was keeping the relief firmly shut.

Bruce I am quite happy with the pressure without the extra spring, it will be OK until I can do a full strip and rebuild.

The small spring in the picture is exactly what I got.

The extra spring has been confined to the scrap bucket.
