MG TD TF 1500 - Bolt Size Clutch housing to block
Went to see if I could mount a drip pan, discovered missing two bolts of Clutch housing to engine block actually two lowest at 6 and 8 O'clock, don't need full set offered by Moss just need to know size don't want to try and wind up stripping anything at this point |

Should be M8x1.00, but since its aluminum, somebody probably has stripped the original threads so its anyone's guess. Blair |

Any idea length, I presume they a blind stopped don't want to crack anything or strip if not done yet |
Jon Levine |
Dave Boise will know for sure Jon. But I think the Bell Housing bolts are 1/4" W and are 1” in length. Rod |

Sorry not thinking 1 inch correct ? to use to US #-# |

They aren't blind, they are thru, but get them about an inch (25mm), not sure if too long they would rub on flywheel. Blair |

1/4" is spanner size not bolt size. Mad Morris Metric 8mm x 1mm pitch with Imperial hex (not modern metric 8mm x 1.25mm pitch) x 1 inch long. Ray TF 2884 |

Jon, see http://www.ttalk.info/engine_fasteners.htm , courtesy of Dave DuBois. You'll see that they are 8mmx1, 1 inch long. And there are ten of them. How many do you need? Bud |

I had some stripped out and I drilled them and installed Heli Coils. They worked real well with no issues. Heli Coil supplies the proper drill, tap and insertion tool in the kit. They are not BSF, a standard UNF thread. Who's to know, but their all the same. PJ |

Too long and they WILL hit the ring gear. Don't ask how I know that. Joe |

Helicoil produces a set for the correct 8 X 1mm bolts. For BSF and BA fasteners, ReCoil produces kits for all the sizes. Cheers - Dave |

It is just as easy to put in 8x1mm metric helicoils as UNC or UNF helicoils... which would likely be 5/16-18 (course) or 5/16-24 (fine). Standard Metric is 8x1.25mm, fine metric is 8x1mm, just not as available. But with almost the entire engine 8x1mm, it is worth having such a kit. That way, the bolts can all be mad metric and you don't have to keep searching for the proper AF wrench. For small quantities, Moss FTFU or Abingdon carry mad metric fasteners; British Tool also carries them, I believe. |

8 mm = 0.31496" 1mm pitch = 25.4 tpi Resulting in a 0.314" by 25.4 tpi screw. Contrasting with 5/16 FT = 0.3125" by 24 tpi. Its very easy to put the wrong screw into the hole and IT FITS. Ask me who I know? Jim B. |

Not sure of thread pitch, but the bell housing is on with MGB bolts. I didn't know at the time BSF Heli Coils were available. Nothings going to fall off and the car is not concurs quality, it's a driver when done. I don't think it'll mind having a few MGB bolts in the bell housing. All other bolts on the car are correct.
