MG TD TF 1500 - brake lining thickness

Hi, I'm toying with the idea of just having my front brake shoes relined locally. Does anyone know the thickness if I have these done? I researched the archives but only found suggestions to have them "radiused". Thanx in advance.

I don't, but I look forward to the same answers as you do :) Just finished rebuilding all lines hoses and cylinders, and the last thing would be to put new linings on the shoes.

I have NOS linings in boxes drilled for riveting. They are 3/16" thick, made by Mintex.

By the time your done, it might be just as cheap as buying a new complete set of shoes from Moss or other supplier. I opted to buy a complete set and am happy with them. Out of the box and install. PJ

KEITH,
I had my shoes relined locally a few years ago thinking that I would save on shipping and core charges. That was before Moss offered "NEW" shoes with out a core charge. The shoes were done quickly and matched to my drums. The only problem was that the lineing was way to hard! It took an awful lot of pressure to 'whoa" the car down. So make sure that your local guy uses the correct hardness of the linings.
I have since ordered and installed the current "NEW" brake shoes from Moss which don't require a core charge, and the braking is MUCH better.

After looking at prices I would agree that it's probably no more expensive to buy new shoes than it is to buy linings and have them riveted...

Just a clarification,,, My local relineing guy bonded the linings,, no rivets,,,
The Moss price was $59 per axle,,

Don't remember name or address but a number of years ago Bud K suggested a reliner who used I believe a Kevlar" like material I installed the relined units which were epoxied and have been extremely happy with the cost including shipping and the performance. Maybe when Bud gets back from Texas he will speak out.
Jon Levine

Came back last night, Jon. I can't remember the guy's name, but he's no longer doing them. He's in Ohio. Always has an ad on the back page of The British Marque.
IMHO, riveted brake linings are one heckuva waste of money. Try this - measure the thickness of the lining, measure the depth of the rivet hole, measure the thickness of the rivet head. Subtract the head thickness from the hole depth. What you have left over is the mount of brake shoe that's useable. 'Tain't much. Hardly worth the money. Bud

From Oct. 2004:
Bud, thaks for your reqeust. The Kevlar is excellent - drum friendly, no warm-up needed adn a good coefficient for friction. i actually reference T series cars when telling people about the brakes. "These will make even a T series slow down since nothing will make one stop". NO offense to the T car but the brakes are sketchy. We do not have any cores. Turn around time is normally 3 -4 business days once we receive the cores. Thanks and let me know if we can supply additonal information. Ted

after your many responses and some phone calls, I've decided to abandon this idea. It's pretty much a wash price wise so may as well order from Moss or another supplier. Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

Read an article in Farm News that Tribco, out of Cleveland, Ohio, manufactures Kevlar brake and clutch linings. But for some reason, only for tractors and trucks, no cars. I would be curious what's that about. PJ

Paul, likely liability. Some years ago when the linings were really cheap, the local Utility Trailer place would reline, but only for trailers. Of course they never asked me what kind of trailer! George
