MG TD TF 1500 - Brass Piston in Carb chamber

I've had my TD 15169 about three years.
On going through the many, many, boxes of spares I came across a pair of TD carbs with brass pistons with no springs.

Could somebody please tell me how these operate compared to the later ones with springs and why they changed to the later ones?
As usual, thanks in advance.
Cheers,

Brass pistons were used in pre-TD cars - my 1939 TB has them, and maybe my TC, I can't remember. Only the Mark II/TF 1-1/2" carbs used springs.

Good Day All:

My TC6768 and TD3191 both have Brass Pistons AUC 3370, (the 3370 may be on the top or bottom surface of the piston OD, off hand I forget)

The pistons, being brass, were not spring controlled, as the later, lighter aluminium ones so being sans springs is also in order.

I have been running the brass pistons since 1971 in the TD and about 1980 in the TC and have not encountered any problems with sticking, etc.

Hope this is what you require.
Cheers then; respectfully:

tom, i thought early TD's had brass pistons...no? my early TD car has them, but it has passed through several owners. regards, tom

My carburetors are mismatched, one with brass and one has an aluminum piston. Will this cause problems?
Rich (TD 3983) Taylor

Rich - I would go ahead and change over one carb piston so that you have a matched pair - the early TDs did have brass with no spring.

Jack Emdall is correct - those brass pistons were still in use in the early TDs. I was working with mine just this weekend...replacing jet gland seals...

Best regards
DLD

Thanks for the info - I was not sure, I confess, when the brass pistons were phased out. Perhaps I should have made that clear, or said they were used AT LEAST in the TB and TC.
