MG TD TF 1500 - BRITAIN BAILS OUT OF EU

Britain bailed out of the EU!!! I suspected they would. The vote was 48.1% to 51.9%.

The British Pound Sterling has fallen to $ 1.3652, the lowest I have seen since 1997.

Cheers

Time to book that overseas holiday? (And convince the missus to fill the suitcases with MG parts on the return flight?).

Matthew.

Yes, that's the upside; but what about UK bank share values, starting tonight! - I'm thinking Natwest, Lloyds etc. down, Bank of Ireland up?? Matt, get on to Chris Gannon in Melbourne, he'll know! John.
J P Hall

Matthew, Other than world markets, is your monetary system directly affected by the British pound? Just curious as I know nothing about your system. PJ

I haven't followed EU financials so I'm truly ignorant. Is part of their departure because they were tired of bailing out Greece?
W. A. Chasserq

Not wanting to turn this into a political discussion.
The main reason is mass immigration from 3rd world countries through Europe, the EU rules took away our border controls
As regards Greece, most of the money given to Greece is being used to bail out German banks that loaned the money in the first place.

Well sad to say, as the pound drops so does my pension over here. The exchange rate is certainly going the wrong way. Not to mention the Bank commissions. they never go down.
Just hope it recovers in the future.

Britain was less affected by the financial dislocations because of their (now shown to be brilliant) decision not to participate in the Euro.

Lots of complex issues here, but it seems the EU has just evolved too far for the British people to maintain their sense of self and sovereignty. When it was just the Common Market it was of benefit, now, as a governing body, it is perceived as an undemocratic burden.

Unfortunately, the consequences are unknown. A united, intertwined Europe was originally conceived after the devastation of two world wars sparked in Europe. Hopefully this fracture, which could be contagious, won't devolve into a Balkanized Europe. Scotland is already pounding the drum to remove itself from the UK and to stay in the EU. There are rumblings in Northern Ireland, as well, and lord knows that benighted region doesn't need any more unrest.

Fasten your seatbelts!

As a British friend remarked to me last week, the UK has had its own "1776" moment.

I thought this was pretty good commentary:

Matthew, Not much room in the bag now the airlines have adjusted the weight per person. Plus the VAT is hard too claim back now, not in full anymore.
Rod Brayshaw

Paul, I don't know much about world economics but it seems that every time there is a problem somewhere else, our dollar has to go down. They sneeze, we catch a cold. No particularly special link with Britain that I am aware of.

Who are the contenders for the US Presidential elections?

Hil'liar'y and Trump
Gene Gillam

Now to be fair you should have said Hil'liar'y and Chump. :)

What exactly has any of this to do with half century old British Sports cars? Politics have ruined more than one BBS. I hope the moderator steps in and puts a stop to this before it's too late.

Tim
TW Burchfield

Well Tim it could be whather those of us who own or aspire to own 50 year old British sports cars will be able to continue to do so as our Country becomes no longer the UK but possibly EAW (England and Wales) and we run out of cash! Politics is pretty critical in this instance I would suggest.

I'm with Tim. The only relevance I can see is that parts purchased in England will now be cheaper for those of us who live outside the UK. And that isn't a bad thing.. Cheers

Agree with Tim - I think it's important to the enjoyment as well as the credibility of the BBS as a source of knowledge and wisdom, that we all have the decency to not impose our views on politics, religion, and even social issues, on a readership whose background we know nothing about. There are plenty of other forums available for the sharing of those topics.
We probably all have a view on the topics mentioned - I certainly do - but I think it is a little arrogant to assume that others on this particular BBS wish to hear those views. Regards, John.

This thread is no different to any other OT thread.
You read this if you 'want' to and you post if you 'want' to. Simple as that.

Thank you Matthew...easy enough to skip right over if you're not interested...title says it all.

You think it would be possible to talk about the issue of Brexit without sneering at one US Presidential candidate or another.Apparently not.
Geoffrey M Baker

Well, I look at it this way, the good people of England have the right to run their country as they wish, it's their country, not ours! Any disruptions to outside interests must be excepted and will be in the future. I give them credit for trying to do what they think is correct for their future. Ok, just my 2 cents, enough said, I'll say no more. PJ
Paul161

My thoughts too, Geoffrey - but let's leave it there - Matthew is right, and I prefer to concentrate on Matters MG. John.
J P Hall

An analogy:

You're at an MG car meet. You're standing with a group of attendees talking MG of course. Someone mentions Brexit. A few respond. Would you:

a: Proclaim that you came her to see and discuss MG's, and such political talk had no place here?

b: Quietly walk away, if you were very annoyed, and concentrate on the magnificent MG's you came to see?

I would guess the latter, and I think the same applies to a forum thread you have no need to click on and read if you feel it's not appropriate to the forum.

Well said, Larry. What a pity we have to be so PC nowadays.

I feel particulary sorry for the young people who voted overwhelming to stay in Europe and have now lost their EU passport giving them the right to live and work in 27 other countries.

D Lamb

D Lamb, how many of them had taken advantage of it prior to losing it?
Gene Gillam

"easy enough to skip right over if you're not interested...title says it all. "

The title covers Brexit, which is a topic that might be of some interest. That doesn't give anyone here the right - or reason - to start randomly slamming Clinton OR Trump - or any other politician.

I got into trouble once on this forum just for saying that ALL our politicians were worthless.

If you want a political discussion, go find a political news story and start firing away in the comments section.

Your political opinions do NOT belong here.
Geoffrey M Baker

I do find it interesting that Brexit may have one very large unintended consequence: it may rekindle the Scottish nationalist vote and result in ScExit...
And possibly even in Northern Ireland. Both voted heavily to remain in the EU and while I think it's unlikely, Brexit may give Northern Irelanders reason to (for the first time in a long time) consider a union with Ireland!
Geoffrey M Baker

At the very least it looks like we are back to having borders in Ireland between the north and south if only for customs duty purposes.

I have enjoyed driving between the 2 lately and only realising I was in the north when the speed limits went from kph to mph. Initially I couldn't understand why the distance to Dublin was getting further away as I was driving towards it. Unfortunately I wasn't doing the drive in an MG...maybe next year sometime.
D Lamb

Sort of reminds me how the old British Leyland company swallowed up several brands before they slowly imploded. MG were lucky to scrape through (albeit in an a rather altered form).
Interesting to see on TV some Scots saying: "Well I would have voted for independence if I knew this was going to happen".

Matthew.
M Magilton

I remember when crossing the border in Ireland meant some very young, very scared British Army lads coming down the bus with their fingers on their machine guns and totally white knuckled... I felt sorry for them (when I wasn't feeling sorry for myself!). That was 1972. Went up on the train once and they blew up the station just before I got there...
