MG TD TF 1500 - BW T-5 Conversion?

Anyone making a bell housing for our cars to fit a BW T-5 transmission? PJ

Paul,

Something I've thought about many times. The S10 uses a Aisin-made Izuzu gearbox and they're plentiful.

Unfortunately, they're also somewhat larger than than the Datsun/Nissan and Ford Type 9 boxes. Generally, these boxes measure abt 25 to 26 inches (Dim D, below) from the front face of the box to the end of the tailshaft, and are quite wide. The dimensions I'm missing are the width and height. Below is a sketch of the dimensions. Note that the output shaft is usually abt.7½" but can vary depending on model

If you're going to try anything, the best choices come from the Izuzu-engined S10s for around 1985 with the 1.9 to 2.0 4 cyl engine. In these cases, the final ratio is 0.86. Anything else will come with a too-tall final drive, usually of 0.72 which IMHO, would be too hard on our engines.

By comparison, the Ford Type 9 is 0.82, the Datsun 201 is 0.846, and the Toyota T50 is 0.861.

Another point about the earlier ('85 and before) gearbox is that they have mechanical speedo take-offs; unlike the later ones that require a pulse transmitter.

I'm sure there are other issues, but its too early to get into these right now.

I must confess that this is one possibility that I would like to explore as I feel it would be more cost effective ... something that an old geezer like me might be able to fit in my limited retirement budget.

Gord, I also have thought of this before and yes the S-10 was the vehicle I was thinking about. I've even thought about the transmission on my old 86 4 cylinder Ford Ranger, but the bell and case are all one piece. There are too many transmissions out there not to have one or two that would make a good conversion for our cars. I'm always looking. Almost as bad as trying to figure out an electronic fuel gauge. LOL. PJ

Gord, Here's the measurements of the T-5 in the Chevy S-10, the width is not shown. My concern would be the shifter position possibly being too far forward. PJ

This is also a transmission of interest. Toyota 18-R.

They make bellhouses to match various Toyota gearboxes to XPAG and other MG engines. A large number of MGs in Australia use their bellhouses to match to Toyota Supra T5 gearboxes.

Their bellhouses are 25mm (1") longer than the XPAG bellhouse, but the clutch shaft is the same distance from the engine as on the original. (ie you use same clutch parts). Dellow can also supply yokes, speedo cables etc to match the gearbox to engine and transmission.
cheers Stuart

Stuart, Thanks for that bit of information. I like the Toyota 18-R 5 speed transmission as it's probably one of the smallest transmissions out there, 5th gear being in the rear section, not in the main case. PJ
