MG TD TF 1500 - cam specifications

We are currently checking the valve timing with the newer crane 3/4 cam that was installed by the previous owner. Using the specification sheet that came with the cam we are finding on our first measurement pass on cylinder number 1 there is variation from the stated specs. For instance, on the intake valve it checked 7 degrees late in opening and on the exhaust valve it checked 3 degrees early. We are going to look at our measurement system to ensure accuracy and go through the full measurement process again for all cylinders. My question is what variation or tolerance is allowable to the cam specifications?
Andre de la Chevrotiere

Virtually no variation is acceptable - less than 1/2 a degree. Are you sure it is a Crane cam? What color is it? Does it have wide lobes? Is it marked?

Sounds like the cam is not the one you are using the specs for, or are measuring wrong?
George Butz

From the paperwork I have it is a Crane cam, gold in color and has wide lobes. Our measurement system is in question at this point and we are going to work on another approach Monday. We were taking our readings with the head in place, tappet cover off and placing a dial indicator on top of the tappet and rotating the flywheel. This was all done after we had set up TDC using the degree wheel. We are now considering taking the rocker arm off, removing the push rods, and taking a reading directly into the top of the tappet with a long stem dial indicator.

The color would be copper, not a gold coating, which is used during heat treating.

I have off set keys to adjust timing as needed.
Why don't you contact Crane directly?
Len Fanelli

Thanks, I will give them a call. I had heard that they went out of business. Also, I checked the color of the cam and it is copper not gold. My mistake!
