MG TD TF 1500 - Carb Blowback

Hi all,

The MGTD had some real trouble starting today, I opened up the bonnet so I could take a look and there were a few occasions when the right carb was blowing some fuel back. Once I got it started it ran for a bit and then died down, I had to start it a few times and really keep my hand on the throttle bar to keep the RPMs up to keep it going. Prior to today it was starting and running relatively well, put in new plugs about a month ago, so not sure what may have happened. Is this a timing thing? Stuck valve or maybe a valve became misadjusted? Looking for some guidance where to start looking.

Thanks,

Steve

I would check for vacuum leaks first

I would look at the valves first. Sticking maybe.
Old gas ?

Along with dried up gaskets causing vacuum leak, oddly enough those symptoms you describe also are similar to a failed condenser--if you are running points ignition.

Check your floats; if one has sunk or jammed you would have an over-rich condition. If it is no longer doing what you describe, the float (or float valve) could have cleared up.

Thanks all, my floats are fine, I am running points and found an article about the condensor, replacing them seems to be a quick troubleshooting action and the Plate Kit from Moss is just under $50 so cheap enough to try out.

Just purchase a G 120 P condenser from any parts store.

> CONDENSER:

No need to buy a new breaker plate.

T-Series condensers from Moss have a bad reputation for failure. (Two Moss condensers failed on my TF soon after installation.) MGB condensers require a new breaker plate, or a new hole must be drilled and tapped in the T-series breaker plate.

Buy a condenser for a 1978 Plymouth Arrow. The mounting "ear" on the condenser fits the T-series breaker plate with no modification. See photo below. Many are less than $2.00. Been running one in my TF for two years - no problem.

A Plymouth Arrow condenser is available with two mounting ears ... don't buy it. It won't fit.

Len: The mounting clip on the G 120 P condenser doesn't easily fit onto the breaker plate in my TF.

> POINTS:

Check your point gap.

On a recent overnight drive, a club member's MGB suddenly started to stumble, misfire, etc. An hour of shade-tree-mechanic work in the hotel parking lot the next morning revealed that the point gap was almost fully closed. New distributor. New points. Screwed tightly to the breaker plate. Gapped the points with a business card. Ran like a champ.
