MG TD TF 1500 - Carb Float Bowl Covers
While ordering a few new fiber washers for my carb float bowls I note that the bowl covers have a different part number (Moss). Of course the washers are the same but I am just curious as to the difference in the covers front and rear. Looking at my spare set of carbs I see no visual difference. Both covers on my spare set are marked 0611 by S.U. What am I missing? |

Nothing. This is a sore debate. The SU parts book for the TD shows only one number for both float bowls. ![]() |

Thanks Chris. My eyes are OK then :-) Another quick question. My old carb bowl covers had the push pin in the top and the current ones have the pin holes, but plugged. What were the pins for? |
L Karpman |
The pins are for pushing down the floats to force fuel into the bowl. Since the jets seem to clog often perhaps this was a way to get them to flush. |

Good day Mr. Karpman: The tickler pin and spring can be installed in the blanked off float chamber lids by drilling them out, with an appropriate sized drill bit should you so desire. I reckon, you are most likely aware of this and I don't wish to be thought of as being insulting, but; I do have this nasty habit of butting-in ! Right then! Cheers for now: Respectfully: Jack Emdall, Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia, Canada |

Thanks for refreshing my memory folks. On my old carbs, I believe I read at some point that using epoxy to seal around the pin, as it was a source of possible leakage. On my old ones, there is epoxy around the pin rendering them non-functional, and I can't recall if I did this or I got the car that way. In any case, thanks for the answers. |

Looking in Burlen Fuel Systems catalog, there are different part numbers for the front and rear carbs. This issue was brought up on the MG Experience forums and in spite of the fact that BFS has a front and rear cover, everyone who responded (including me) all have the same cover on both front and rear carburetors. Perhaps the covers were different on different cars using the same carburetors. Cheers, |

Dave: There were different front and rear bowl assemblies, but they both used the same cover (the right or front one - part 47)![]() |

Chris - I was speaking of the float bowl covers available from Burlen Fuel Systems at the present time. They show different covers (with different P/Ns) for front and rear. What was available back in the days when the TDs were built, I have no idea. Cheers - Dave |

My TF 1500, Built Jan 16, 1955 has different float bowl covers front and rear on the H4 carbs |

That fact is, that there is a right and and a left hand lid for the H2 and the H4. See the SU web-page http://sucarb.co.uk/float-chambers-spares/float-lid-assemblies/h-type-t2/early-style-bullnose.html. I have seen two of one kind on the same carb set, and this requires a connecting hose of a longer length. Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |
