MG TD TF 1500 - Carb piston oil cap

I looked up this one on the archive but did not see a definitive answer.

The damper on the top of the TD carb. Mine (TD 4139) and another on another set of carbs I have, has a hexagon brass cap.

Others say it is round with a knerled edge.

This could be another of those production changes, but I thought I would get the group's opinion.

My restored MKII carbs are knurled round. But my 3 sets of H2s my H4 early Triumph and MGA carbs all have hex heads. Some have breather holes some don’t.

Some of the very early factory photos show the round knurled caps too.

And adding even more mystery to all of this: Mine also have one of the flats beveled a bit on top. I cannot fathom why at all.

caps with no hole go on the later "dust free carbs" with the integral three lug chambers.
If you put them on an earlier carb the piston will not rise correctly and go very rich

The round caps are drilled for the non vented dashpots and it's all I have seen on the 1 1/4" carbs used on the TD's...well at least the ones that hadn't been buggered. The hexagon caps are normally not drilled and are usually found on the internally vented 1 1/2" carbs on the TF, MGA and TD MKII's I'm guessing

The caps on my 1950 TD (3453) are of the brass, vented, round knurled edge variety. They are original to the car.

The '49 YT has vented brass hexagon edges. They are also original to the car.

Just to confuse things, I have just come away from a friends TD Mk2 (9672). I had never noticed before that his H4 carbs have the later 3 lug chambers but the vent gallery was never drilled so they are not dustfree type.
I have been messing with T Types for 50 years but still find new things.

Look at carb page in fromthedrameup.com catalog for some
cap info and differences. Doug had an article in TSO (I think) some years ago explaining the types and markings. A local TD did have an un-drilled black plastic cap which was one of many reasons it
ran badly. George

Thanks. Per Doug, all TD's had the round cap and the TF had the hex cap.

In looking at my factory pictures, I did find a picture of the carbs. They show round caps.

The second picture is a close-up.

So it appears I need to order a set of round ones. Anyone have a set they want to sell?

I have a set of the hex with the MG logo in them to trade.

Interesting that all TD's had round caps. Mine are hex but my car had a rough life it's first 16 years. Some mechanic probably needed to improve or replace some worn out dampers so he used what he had.

Scanning all my unrestored pictures I could not find anything but round caps.
Christopher Couper

My TF had one drilled cap and one solid and when Bob Johnson restored the carbs he soldered up the cap with the hole. Probably another reason it poorly. PJ
