MG TD TF 1500 - Carpet Hole for Gearbox filler

Chris Couper's site shows a carpet cover for the bellhousing shroud & gearbox section, with a cutout for the gearbox filler and dipstick. He also shows a small square as a cover for that piece.
My current carpet cover doesn't have one. I guess the PO just removed the carpet every time.
I'm just curious what people do if they have a hole here... how do you keep it in place? Do you glue it to the metal cover piece that screws to the housing?
Haven't seen how this is done, any help appreciated.

Make a carpet flap that pivots on a stud secured thru the tunnel carpet piece.

Page 38 of the TD Driver's Handbook 6th Edition shows what appears to be the carpet glued to the metal cover. Tried to upload a pic but no joy. Cheers

Geoff,

Peter is correct, the carpet is glued to the metal piece.
A hint, glue either black felt or a black carpet piece to the UNDERSIDE of the metal piece as well. This assists in keeping engine/exhaust/gearbox heat away from your legs!

As I under stand you, you do not have the metal cover.
You can purchase one from Moss. I did.
You could also make one. sort of football shaped. It should overlap the hole by at least 1/2" perhaps 3/4" might be better.

It needs to be formed to match your tunnel BEFORE you put the carpet down. There is also a special nut to hold the cover.

As noted I did apply something on the bottom of the cover to help seal the hole. I am not all that sure its needed since the tunnel carpet will help seal things and it makes it difficult to install the nut.
I had to make an extended nut to seal mine. I hope in the future I will be able to get the "authentic" nut to fit.

Also take care to match the grain of the carpet so it matches the carpet on the tunnel and on the foot rest.

I have the metal cover. It's just that the carpet that is currently installed never had a hole cut into it. I guessed that the best way was to glue a piece of carpet to the metal cover, but wanted to make sure that was how people were doing it (it might be a very tight fit to get it on the handmade carpet piece that is currently installed).
Now I know, I'll cut a hole, and just glue a piece to the existing cover.

The carpet over the large metal gearbox panel is fitted fairly loosely(originally) in relation to being able to effectively seal the edges of the metal piece.

If the original brass 'wing nut' to hold down the metal piece is fitted,it will easily affix to the gearbox cover stud.

I seem to remember that one of the regular MG suppliers
now supplies the correct brass 'wing nut'.

I seem to have lost it in the the last 30 years so I can't supply a picture but I do remember having a non-original carpet covering piece for my TD from a "carpet kit" (don't know if was a Moss or Whitney catalog or some other after market vendor) for that oblong "football" shaped piece.
It was oblong shaped slightly larger than the metal piece with a seamed carpet edge to it but it had a "pocket" on the under side that was about 1/2 the size of the full piece that the metal gearbox cover piece slipped into. It did have a hole in the middle for the post that the special "wing nut" screwed down onto.
Just another of the various different methods for a lot of items on our T's.

Thanks all! I'll concoct something to do the job!

Geoffrey,

Maybe this will be of some help to you.

This is from my 54 TF 1500. I believe it to be an original including the carpet. Hopefully you can see the slight bend that allows it to conform to the gear box tunnel. The wing nut is made of brass. It measures 5-1/4"L X 2-1/2" wide. The bolt hole is 1//4" with a slight oval shape to it.

Dan's looks original to me too. Low profile wing nut.
