MG TD TF 1500 - Carpet underlayment - or no?

I'm working on the carpets on my 51TD and the current carpet set appears to never have had any felt underneath. I'm 6'2 and need as much space as possible. I'm loath to install something that will reduce my space so I'm wondering if others have decided to forgo underlayment and just install carpet directly on the floorboards?

Hi Geoffrey

I suspect it never rains in Arizona but in Glasgow, where I live, if you leave the car out doors, with the top down, for more than thirty minutes the carpets will be saturated. Mine are fitted straight onto the floor boards and are split, under the seats so I can easily remove them for drying out.

I am 6'1" and the jute backing under my carpet causes no loss of space. Helps with the noise from the floor though.

Well, I think I'll leave it out (it wasn't in before, as I mentioned). Some day if I get around to doing more noiseproofing, an underlayment might help.

I like the idea of underlayment but my TD never has had them. I seriously wonder if in a relatively noisy car they would really make any noticeable difference in interior noise.

I insulated the trans cover and toe board, but not the floorboards. Wood is a natural insulator anyway, so I saw no reason for it. PJ

I also sound insulated the transcover. Considering that prior to rebuilding the floorboards and installing fume excluders (totally gone), there were more holes in the car's interior than a fishing net, I think I will find significant reduction in noise already, without adding underlayment!

There never was padding under the seat carpets. Its just the floor, carpet and then the seat tracks.

There was padding under the carpeting in front of the seats. That padding should not interfere with any space in the cockpit and can help reduces noise too.

Note if you follow the technique on installing the carpeting you will notice that the padding fills the areas between tunnel carpet that is tacked down on the edge, the under-seat carpet and the side panels so its at the same level.
