MG TD TF 1500 - Carriage Bolts
Do the carriage bolts that secure the firewall to the tub have any markings on the heads or are they clear? Are those bolts available as original? PJ |

Paul, I don't think that they are supposed to be "carriage" bolts. They are standard hex head bolts with a flat washer under the head to keep the head from crushing the wood. Mark |

Hi, If it is a TF then carriage bolts if TD then hex. My TF ones were unmarked but had been rebuilt before I got it. Ray TF 2884 |

It's 55 TF 1500. It has matching numbers and the bolts need replacing, as some are bent and threads messed up. I would like to replace them all with new and of the same type. Some of mine have marking on the heads and some don't which is the reason for this request. PJ |

Just had a look at the "Original TF Gallery" photo 22 shows plain heads. Ray |

Here's the original cowl bolts. 55 TF. PJ![]() |

No marks on my originals (TF9097). Usual caution: The bodyworks would have purchased these in large batches, no guarantee that each batch were from the same supplier. Matthew. |

Plain headed coach bolts on TF5663. Two different diameter bolts as well, the ones that go through the plate connecting to chassis brace hoop are 5/16" and all the others are 1/4". They have BSF threads (perhaps UNF) but definitely fine thread. |

The image shows four TF firewall coach bolts all BSF from different cars that indicate the original factory paint except Black. Kept for originality purposes. I have not seen any marks on any heads that we have had but as has been pointed out different batches could be marked in this way. ![]() |

Thanks gents, that information is exactly what I wanted to know! I'll order a set of BSF from My British bolt supplier. Not sure of the exact length yet, but I have found 14 of one length and 4 a little longer, all 1/4 inch but the hoop bolts. I'll have to measure them today, along with the 4 hoop bolts. PJ |

Hi All, TFs- No markings on both the 1/4" and 5/16" carriage bolts for the firewall attachment. The 1/4" diam.bolts are 2 and 1/4 inches in overall shank length. The threaded part of the shank is 5/8" in run. As Max I. has correctly indicated, the bolts connecting the plate to chassis brace hoop, are 5/16" in diam.,however each side of the TF has these bolts paired in different lengths. The longer of the bolts is 3" in shank length with the threaded part being 9/16" in length. The round head is approx.11/16" in diam. The shorter 5/16" diam. bolt is only 2 and 3/4" in shank length with the same threaded run as for the 3" bolts. Thanks Rob, I have 5/16 taps and dies BSF and if I cant get close to the right length, I'll buy longer bolts and run the threads up to where they should be. I know some fellas will think I'm going to extremes on these bolts, maybe I am, but as I have said before, even though the color will be off, mechanically, I want the car as close to factory as I can get it and with this car that is a chore in it's self. Fortunately only a couple pieces of sheet metal had to be replaced, the engine side panels. They were chopped to fit MGA shocks, which I replaced with the correct ones and new side panels. Thanks again for the info! PJ |

Paul, Pleasure to assist. I like the way you are 'going the extra mile' to get things the way they should be on your car. For me,those challenges often give rise to both the satisfaction, pride and fun of rebuilds associated with these particularly wonderful MGs-TDs and TFs. Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

I am having a problem finding carriage bolts with a BSF thread in anything over 1 1/2 inches long. Moss shows nothing on their site and the Co where I get all my British fasteners, don't have them either. Just might have to go with a standard thread, hope not. PJ |

PJ I had a similar issue with the bumper bolts on my TD. I had purchased some on eBay, where the seller swore they were correct for a TD. They were too short. I used UNC but with BSW nuts. By controlling the length you cannot tell what thread they are. I did use SS UNC and I turned the heads down so they matched the originals. I then buffed them up so they shine like chrome. Jim B. |

I just checked Abington Spares, they show none! PJ |
