MG TD TF 1500 - Center Cam bearing removal

hi all.

I am just now trying to remove the cam from the engine. All is apart, the engine is out, the dowel bolt is out. The center bearing doesn't seem to budge. I do not want to force it. Are they a tight fit, requiring gentle persuasion, or should they move out of the block fairly easily. Thought I would ask first before I do something I shouldn't. I most definately do not want to mark the bearing.

Any suggestions?

How many dowel bolts did you remove?

there is a centre one

The thread "Replacing the camshaft" in the archive will answer your question. I did this the hard way with the engine still in the car. Cheers

Peter, Sounds like I am having the same problem with the center bearing that you had with yours. It is very snug in the block and will not budge easily. I really do not want to damage the bearing removing it. Maybe I can make a split circle wooden sacrificial buffer so I can use the cam lobe to provide direct pressure on the bearing. I also thought that the front bearing did not have to be removed to remove the camshaft.

My cam is buggered and its getting replaced with the roller cam.

When removing the cam the front bearing can stay CR & so can the rear. I believe the best method is to make a puller as I suggest in the thread "Replacing the camshaft". See the pics & a detailed description. This approach ensures gentle even pressure can be constantly applied in a controlled manner with no damage to the bearing. The puller can be knocked up in about 15 minutes. Before you install your roller cam I do recommend you read "Valve springs for roller lifters" in the archive. Cheers

Peter, I have read that thread about valve springs. I did read the thread "Replacing the camshaft" In the WSM it just cautioned about damaging the center bearing with the cam on removal.

Valve springs are a bit of an issue.... but that is next.

CR the thread on "Replacing the camshaft" is in the archive. Sorry I should have made that clearer. It gives a blow by blow description which will make your task a doddle. Cheers

CR perhaps you should consult with your supplier, or an engine builder, for the most part this BBS caters to laymen, not the professionals who are ASE Master Technicians.

CR I would contact your supplier about any valve spring issues, or an engine builder.

Peter, I did search the archives for the "Replacing the Camshaft" . Lack of punctuation in my previous reply changed the meaning. getting lazy in my old age.

Len, thank-you for your advice.

Good luck with the removal of that troublesome centre bearing CR. If you do find any of the info I've provided in the "Replacing the camshaft" thread is inaccurate please let me know & I'll correct it. Like most of the information posted on this site it is for the benefit of those who want to undertake the work on these beautiful little cars themselves & is based solely on the personal experience of the contributor. Having said that I'm sure if you follow my suggestions on that thread you'll have no problems at all. Cheers
