MG TD TF 1500 - Choke pull... clicks.

From a discussion on an A forum: who has a choke cable that clicks, and is it original?

Anyone know of a replacement for the T Or the A that clicks?

Original TD cables did not click. They pull out smoothly, then you rotate it a quarter turn to lock it in various detent held positions. No clue about A's.

The originals did click as the pawl slides over the birdsmouths. It's turned a 1/4 turn clockwise to release it. The replacements were as George described. I have an original & have restored two using info from the archive. Cheers

Just for general info, the TC has several detents that can be felt (I would not call them clicks) on the original choke pull. You can pull it to a specific detent (1st 2nd 3rd 4th) or anywhere in-between. It stays there at whatever setting until you push it back in, giving a little bias to the right or left, I cannot recall at the moment. No turning of the choke knob. The slow running control knob gets turned.

Pic of original choke being restored. The 5 birdsmouths have been dressed. When the pawl drops into the birdsmouth it makes an audible sound, which could be referred to as a click. Cheers

Mitchell. Pic of an original TD choke handle & housing. They are very easy to restore using a file, a multi strand stainless steel gear cable from a bicycle shop & some solder. If the pawl is missing, ( the small object beside the 10 cent piece), even that can be fabricated. The slot to the right of the sliding spring steel cover on the housing is where the pawl is located. I checked out my original choke cable today. Seems it lives passively in the clockwise position, and it does click a little when twisted CCW when you pull it out. I always thought that a ccw twist was what you did to lock it after you pulled it out. Learn something new every so often!

The MGA cable has detents. It is a straight pull and push.... no twist.
