MG TD TF 1500 - Chrome quality
Hi I want to buy a new pair of door handles for my TF. Thinking of Moss vs Abingdon, has anyone bought a set recently? Any thoughts on the quality of one vs the other?? Tom '54 TF |

Tom, I order mine from Moss and they seem to be fine. No problem so far, although, as you know, I haven't had the TF on the open road all that much. About 1900 miles in total since rebuild. John |

I have just bought a pair on line for £40. They are brass rather than mazak. The seller is still advertising them. Jan t |

Jan I bought a pair of handles from the seller in the UK. They are chrome on brass. I phoned Moss and they confirmed that theirs are chromed "potmetal". Also, the packet from the UK was here in less than a week! Nice. Tom '54 TF |

Great news Tom. Seller is still advertising them. My next search will be brass rear lamp plinths. Again repros all appear to be pot metal or Mazak as we call it in the UK Jan T |

Jan, please post the source for better quality tail lamp plinths if you find them. They are the only substandard plated parts on my car. Thank you. Jack Long TF 7157 |

Hi Jack, I took my pitted plinths to a local chromium plater in Glasgow. He said the only thing I could do was remove the plating mechanically and he would then heavy copper plate thm before chroming. I spent hours with my Dremel mini grinder but found that the pits in the pot metal were like wood worm holes and it is impossible to linish them out. After grinding off the surface many, many more holes were opened up. I know a guy from my interest in pre war MGs who has a brass foundry. I am about to see if he can cast some forme. Jan T |

Jan In today's world I would search out a place that can do a 3d printer of the part. That will make it pretty easy to cast. Neat thing on these is once it is scanned into the computer, you can "erase" the pot marks and have a casting that is perfect. Here is a story that Jay Lenno did on the 3d printers. http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/extras/articles/jay-lenos-3d-printer-replaces-rusty-old-parts-1/ |
