MG TD TF 1500 - Cleaning Moss Convertible Top

Hi, Looking for suggestions on the best ways to clean a Moss convertible top on my 1955 TF 1500, without removing it from the frame. Appreciate any feedback. Thanks, Tim

Tim, for spot cleaning I use Spray and Wash on my Moss tops and tonneaus. It removed grease marks without leaving a spot or residue. For whole top cleaning i used RaggTopp products. I had an XK8 with a really dirty top and the RaggTopp cleaner worked very well.

Renovo make a good cleaner - also available from Moss, I believe. However, Resolve carpet cleaner has also been used to good effect. (Spray on, let sit a few minutes, and gently scrub off.) Resolve has removed many of my greasy hand prints from a tan top.

Besides the product you choose make sure you use a mohair brush so do not damage the fabric. I use one designed to be used on horses.

May I also suggest you treat the fabric top with a preserver which will make dirt, etc cleanup a breeze. I use a 303 product on all my convertible tops. They make one for vinyl and a different one for cloth.

Cleaning is one thing, but what can I do to refresh my Tonneau fabric?
The fabric is very faded by the sunlight. The fabric was original double duck, tan color but now it is almost white.
Any suggestion?

If you are sure its cotton it may be dyed in a similar colour to the original. Its difficult to get the colour perfectly even, especially if you try to do it in a small container where there will be multiple folds in the fabric. It needs to be done in a large tub, e.g. bought from a diy store (not the bath as you may never get rid of the stains!). You also need to be thorough with preparation, removing all traces of any treatment or stains. If the fabric is made from two layers bonded together you may need to be careful of temperature. There is plenty of good advice on dyeing cotton on the net. I have never tried to dye a tonneau but I have successfully dyed large pieces of fabric very evenly for other purposes.
