MG TD TF 1500 - Cleaning SU carburettors.

Hi fellow enthusiasts,
What is the best way to clean up my carby's on the exterior.
I believe there is a solution of some sort that I can put the bodies in to give them a nice restored look.
Regards Robert.

Hi Robert,

Cellulose thinners (acetone), applied with a rag will get rid of most of the staining - always worked for me.

Hope this helps,

Depending on how much the surface in coroded, dissasembly and buffing will bring them to near chrome finish,,,

...depending on how 'chrome' like you want them...its just polishing aluminum...
This is a hub I did... start with 400 grit...600...800...1200 and metal polish...
Works everytime but is labour intensive....(like 20 minutes...)

Find yourself a tube of Autosol polish. And a couple of clean rags, and gloves, unless you want your hands black with the aluminum oxide.

Good day Robert. If you go the polished look(I personally don't care for as the carbs weren't polished as original, but to each there own)be cerry careful if you use power tools as the domes can get very hot and will warp. Now you have something pretty but scrap. I've had to try to correct someone else's work.

Hi Robert,

I use citric acid for cleaning the carb bodies and associated parts. You buy it in crystals and mix with hot water, leave for a hour or so then wash with warm water. This is the same stuff you put in your kettle to remove limestone.

There is a cleaner on sale in UK supermarkets called Clit Bang and its main use is to remove limescale from showers and bath taps. However, it is superb for cleaning metal items. I have used it for numerous aluminium and brass items and they come up like new. I also use it to clean the windscreen on our "everyday" car - wipers work perfectly but I am careful to swill it off promptly.

Walnut shells in your bead blaster. Do not use glass beads as they give an unsightly frosted lood and are somewhat difficult to get out of every nook and cranny. Walnut shells remove no metal and give the original pewter look as well as being quick and easy to do.

Clit Bang has a whole other meaning here in the states...had to read that one twice..hmmm..wonder what their advertising T-shirt looks like? LOL. Regards, Tom

Or did you mean Cillit Bang?

Thanks Fellas,
Your input in really appreciated.
In the few weeks I have been a member of this site I have been given a lot of help.
Both locally and from around the globe.
Much appreciated.

I use a product called 'Flitz'. You can see it at www.flitz.com. It is the best cleaner/polish I have found. I use it on my airplane spinner also.

Dave Braun probably can add to this. He has a carb rebuild service and has experimented with some different ways of cleaning the carbs.

All I can say is that whatever he does, they come out super. These are my MGB carbs that Dave did

Cillit Bang makes for an awfully less interesting T Shirt than Jan's Freudian slip...
