MG TD TF 1500 - Clock4Classics

Hi all, has anyone used "Clocks4Classic"- Mark Williams - in the UK to repair their TF Clock?

As I understand it, he has developed a solid state infra-red sensor and microprocessor that does away with the points altogether. In essence a permanent fix. I'm thinking about either sending him my clock for repair (90GBP) or buying his DIY kit (50GBP). He doesn't repair speedo's so I'm leaning toward the kit. My speed indicator needle works great, but the odometers don't.

I still need to contact Hal Kramer to see if he's seen this conversion, but since it's late Sunday night here, I thought the BBS would be a good place to start.

Any input or experience with this conversation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

I am also considering their service for my TD clock.
any reviews?

I sent the clock from my TF and a clock from an XK120 to clocks4classics and was delighted with the results. The clocks are now back in full working order and tick as they once did. Its an unusual repair using using an electronic circuit to replace the points but works perfectly. They were repaired in a week. This compares with double the price and about 6 weeks quoted by an alternative UK repairer.

The clocks4classics fix makes a lot of sense. I just ordered a kit. Payment with PayPal - a very easy transaction. The proprietor's name is Mark Willows.

I stand corrected Jim, the proprietor's name is Mark Willows. Thanks for spotting that.

Had my '53 TD clock fixed by them. Mark replaced faulty coil for free . Now ticks away nicely, keeps good time, very pleased

I would love to replace the clock with a solid state, independent battery operated one but with the original hands and face. This would mean perfect time and no issues with removing or isolating the main battery.

I just finished installing Mark's upgrade and am thrilled with the results. Everything is very well documented and easy to accomplish and the finished product no longer depends on a brush contact with the balance wheel to provide the kick that keeps the clock running. I left the clock running on my work bench for nearly a week in order to adjust the speed (nearly impossible when the clock is installed in the tach and in the car). The only problem (which is not really a problem) is that the ticking is so faint that it is impossible to tell if the clock is actually running. This is off set by the fact that the clock is self starting once power is applied to it.

Bottom line, this is a worthwhile modification to be made, either as a do it yourself job or sending your clock to Mark to do it for you. Cheers - Dave

Dave, what is the cost in dollars for the kit and what was the mailing cost?

Tom - The total, with shipping was £60, which at the time I purchased it came to $94.60, a bit spendy but I feel well worth it after all the fussing around that I did trying to get the clock to work and stay working. The getting it to work was easy - keeping it working was a dismal failure until I got the modification that Mark came up with. Cheers - Dave

And in the USA there is Mike Eck of Jaguar Clock who does electronic upgrades on Smiths clocks. I had my Jaguar 3.8S clock done by him a few years back.

This might be more economical than sending back and forth to the UK
