MG TD TF 1500 - Clutch Adjustment?

With the clutch fully depressed I am having trouble getting into reverse so I guess it is time for an adjustment. (My late TD has a clutch rod, not a chain.)

The adjusting nut at the end of the clutch rod is all the way in. I seem to have a lot more than 3/4" free play. I also have the adjustable clutch linkage rod installed.

I assume that I have to shorten the length of the clutch linkage rod then adjust the operating rod. Can anyone confirm that or provide more guidance?

Thanks

Mark,

You need to read this Tech mod to the TD clutch linkage By Mike O’Connor. You may have to make the adjustable rod as shown, to get the correct center position as described. Not too hard to modify the existing rod.

It makes a difference.

If you are at the end of your adjustment now. Is there a possibility that the carbon throw out bearing is worn as well? Or the pedal bushing in the box for that matter?

Don't know if you have looked at that lately

The relationship in Figure 6 of the above is the most important. Get that correct and all will work well, unless some internal issue. George

You may also have incremental wear on the various clutch control parts. The clevis pins develop grooves and the holes wear oval, and the sloppy fit means less and less clutch throw. The pivot pin on the sump wears as does the bushing that fits on it, as do the pedal shaft and bushings, and the throw-out bearing. It might even be time for a new clutch. The linkage needs to have as little play as possible, so fix that first - it's messy, but good to have lubricated and clean.

To fix the oval linkage holes they need to be welded up and re-drilled, or replaced with new. The linkage mods noted above do help the control and smoothness, but will not make up for wear in the entire operating system.

Strongly recommend the Mike O’Connor modification. It wont cure other ailments however it certainly changes the mechanical advantage specs.

2nd,3rd,and 4th recommend the O'Connor mod ala Rod, George,Graeme. A "Required" mod for TDs.

Sounds as if Mark has the Moss Adjustable Clutch Link. Shouldn't it provide enough adjustment to resolve the reverse gear issue? Anyone know to find Moss' directions for adjusting the adjuster? Bud
