MG TD TF 1500 - Clutch Adjustment

I'm at the point of adjusting the clutch on my rebuild and realized that I have a adjustment rod instead of adjustment cable that is called for my TD's production number which is an early TD. Can I still make the adjustments using the rod which is for TD production number 22251 all the way through to the TF series?

CJ - Yes, you can still make the adjustment for free travel before the throwout bearing makes contact with the pressure plate thrust surface. If I remember correctly, they give the free throw of the pedal, which is 3/4" of pedal travel before the throwout bearing makes contact with the pressure plate.

What you do need to do it to make and install a pedal stop bolt in the pedal box, something that is not covered in the shop manual or any other place that I know of. I am e-mailing you the information on the pedal stop bolt. Cheers - Dave

The cable, being braided, eventually unravels, and jams or breaks at inopportune moments. Many (most?) have been replaced with the rod, although there are those who prefer the feel of the cable.

You may need one of the adjustable link rods to get proper adjustment. Look at the Moss clutch page, and click on the info/installation instruction page for the best explanation of the linkage. Very easy to get it to work well and then snap the end of the rod off if not set up correctly. Many years ago TD/TF 8" pressure plates had a different part # than the MGA plate, over time the A plate, which had been sold as a "heavy duty" plate, replaced it totally. I recall the slight difference in the finger release pad height started the issues with not enough adjustment and requiring the adjustable relay link. George

Dave - I have two or three of them, NOS, mostly for 2 customers who like them better. I know I bought one on eBay, and the other came from the UK.

Thanks all, staying with the solid link. I did a temporary fix. Took the adjustment nut from an old emergency brake cable which threaded perfectly onto the threaded shaft and was able to use that to make adjustments.
