MG TD TF 1500 - clutch question
Ok, I'm removing the wheel drums and examining the brake shoes and setup. So far, on the left side everything looks correctly set up. However, I noticed that when trying to tighten the rear left wheel drum, I could not lock up the axle. I put the car into different gears and the axle still spun freely. (I eventually managed to tighten the drum on by engaging the handbrake). Does this indicate that the clutch is not properly engaged? |

Geoff, you might to give a bit of thought as to how the differential works. Bud |

Geoff - when you turn one wheel the opposite one will turn in the opposite direction - perfectly normal, and the way a differential works - as Bud says. Put all 4 wheels on the ground and have someone sit on the corner you are tightening, you will be able to tighten the axle nut - VERY tight (150 foot pounds). Less and you run a good chance of damaging both axle shaft and drums. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Geoff - See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYAw79386WI Hokey, but a very good explanation of how a differential works. Cheers - Dave Bud - If you are reading this, you might want to put it on your TTalk as we have had several question regarding rear axles recently. Cheers - Dave |

Great!! Been a while since I played with Tinker-Toys. Sad what modern kids with the electronic toys are missing. Wish I still had my Gilbert Erector Set with the electric motor and open gear cage. Jud ![]() |

I guess that picture is a non-sequetur to the post. I forgot to add: Wish I still had my Gilbert Erector Set with the electric motor and open gear cage but I still have my Lionels. Jud |

David, thanks for the film clip, very neat. Trivia for you: The Victor McLagen motorcycle corps (that performed the first stunts) was one of the hobbies of Victor McLagen, who was a film actor from the 20's to the 50's. His son Andrew McLagen was a major director of movies in the 60s-80's, most notably "The Wild Geese". He's in his 90's now, and lives on San Juan Island, WA; where my sister, a nurse, cares for him. Victor's granddaughter, Mary, is also a Hollywood film director, mostly producing movies for Sandra Bullock. |

Dave D, I want to thank you for posting the youtube video explaining the differential. Not having worked on cars before this restoration (except in college to keep my VW beetle running since I had no money to have someone else fix it), understanding how it works and the pieces involved, makes it all a little less intimidating. Well done, Patrick |
