MG TD TF 1500 - Clutch Rod

Don't want to hijack Huib's thread so I've started anew. Here's a pic of the clutch rod that lost its nuts (snide comments are anticipated) on the first outing in the TD. Don't know if you can see it in this pic but maybe better in the next one. The weird thing is that the nuts that came unscrewed fit a 7/16 wrench and while walking back up the road to find the lost nuts (with surprising success) I also found a 7/16 nut driver on the side of the road ( I had no tools with me on the first drive). Somebody looks out for fools and drunks and I qualify on both counts.

Anyway, the threaded end is severely bent and I suspect was on its way to failure.

The replacement that I got from M is a nice steel rod with a threaded end (just weled on if memory serves)but it's not as neat as this one which is much older and may be OEM. On this ine the threaded end appears to be some kind of insert (swaged? Whatever that means?) and someday I hope to get someone knowledgeable about such things to tell me if a new end piece can be fitted onto this old rod.

At least you can see the bend in the threaded part in this pic.

Jud - What is the car number on your TD? If it is under TD 22251 (Nov. 20 1954) the cause of your bent rod is that the clutch was originally cable operated and was replaced with the rod operated set up. The problem occurs when someone had replace the cable with the clutch, no one told them that a clutch pedal stop bolt has to be installed in the pedal box to prevent the rod threads from fouling on the clutch lever (on the side of the sump). If you will e-mail me at SUfuelpumps@donobi.net, I will send you a complete write up on the problem, including how to make a clutch pedal stop bolt. (Bud may have that write up on his TTalk site). This won't solve your imediate problem with the threaded portion of the rod, put will insure that I won't happen again. Cheers, Dave

Here is the clutchstop i made. It is a simple clamp and can be easyly installed and adjusted. At the pedal box I used a cushionlike material (sticked with adhesive) to avoid a metal-metal contact between stop and pedalbox.
Seems that I love clamps around the clutch. huib

Dave, it's car number 25009 so I think it should have come with a rod originally but I'd like to see your write up on the problem, including how to make a clutch pedal stop bolt anyway. You have mail.

Thanks.
